New Alfa Romeo VELOCE for sale

2009 ALFA ROMEO MITO VELOCE 1.4 Turbo 155 BHP Russo Red
.
Reluctantly selling this great little car, as it is no longer big enough to suit my needs. Purchased from an Alfa dealership in Oct 2010 @ ~6000 miles,...>
with only one owner previous. Currently just below 26000 on the clock (picture included); the car is used daily, so will go over by the time of sale.No outstanding finance. Not looking for PX. Haven`t had any issues mechanically, and only needed one service since (Oct 2011) I purchased it. Have some stone chips to the paintwork in the usual places. Front tyres were installed in August 2011, filled with Nitrogen, and will still be good for a long while yet; The rear ones will need replacing soon (willing to replace if the right price is offered). Tax expires in Sept 2012, and first MOT not due until June 2012. This is when the manfufactures warranty will expire too. It is a sweet car to drive, without having the childish looks of most hot hatches. Very quick when in Sport mode. It looks very professional and beautiful, inside and out. Gadgets inside include: Bluetooth phone connectivity, USB Aux in for music, Dual recording Trip computer, Sport/Normal/All Weather driving modes (Read the webpage for a detailed description of the DNA System - http://www.alfaromeo.co.uk/uk/#/car-technology/alfa-dna-system), Steerwheel controls, plus the standard stuff like CD player, Air Con, central arm rest, ISO fix front and rear seats, etc. Looking for £8,995 ONO, payable by Bank transfer or Cash. This car is advertised elsewhere, so this may end early. Any questions, or to arrange a viewing, please call 07810822570 or message me on here. X

The three first series were assembled by Pininfarina in Grugliasco and the fourth series in San Giorgio Canavese. The last Spider was produced in April 1993, it was also the last rear wheel drive Alfa Romeo produced before Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione was introduced. The engine was a 1570 cc variant of the Alfa Romeo twin cam four cylinder engine, and produced 109 hp (81 kW). Sparsely fitted inside but including five speed manual transmission, disc brakes and independent front suspension, the price on launch in Italy was 2,195,000 lire. The original "Duetto" was in production from 1966–1967; replaced in late 1967 by the 1750 Spider Veloce, powered by a 118 hp (88 kW) 1779 cc engine. In Europe this was fitted with two twin carburettors, whereas models for the North American market (from MY 1969) had SPICA (Società Pompe Iniezione Cassani & Affini) mechanical fuel injection.[7] Modifications were also made to the suspension, brakes, electrics and wheels and tires though the car looked effectively the same. Visible differences were limited to the rear-view mirror repositioned to the door, and different badging on the tail. During the production run, the front repeater lights were moved ahead of the wheelarches. The car's official title was 1750 Spider Veloce, the name "Duetto" being dropped from this point on. A new Spider 1300 Junior, with a 1290 cc engine producing 89 hp (66 kW), was introduced in 1968. This lacked various features of the 1750, including the plastic headlight fairings, the brake servo, hubcaps and opening quarterlight. Due to its round (or long) tail, the Series 1 Spider is sometimes known by the nickname of "Osso di Seppia" - Italian for "cuttlefish bone". This particular car was the model featured in the 1967 movie The Graduate, driven by Ben, the character played by Dustin Hoffman. Dustin Hoffman's Spider runs out of gas in The Graduate. Duetto Spider 1600 Spider (1965) [edit] Series 2 Spider (1970-1982/83) Second generation Spider Junior 1.6 (1974) "Coda Tronca" Also called Giulia Spider Production 1970–1983 Engine(s) 1.3 L I4 1.6 L I4 1.8 L I4 2.0 L I4 Transmission(s) 5-speed manual Related Alfa Romeo Giulia In 1970 the first significant change to the exterior styling was introduced on the 1750 Spider Veloce, with the original's distinctive elongated round tail changed to a more conventional cut-off tail, called the "Kamm tail", as well as improving the luggage space. Numerous other small changes took place both inside and out, such as a slightly different grille, new doorhandles, a more raked windscreen, top-hinged pedals and improved interior trim. 1971 saw the Spider Veloce get a new, larger powerplant - a 1962 cc, 132 hp (98 kW) unit - and consequently the name was changed from 1750 Spider Veloce to 2000 Spider Veloce. The 1600 Spider restarted production a year later as the Spider 1600 Junior, and was visually identical to the 1300. 1974 saw the introduction of the rare, factory request, Spider-Targa. Based upon the Spider, it featured a Porsche style solid rear window and lift out roof panels, all made out of black GRP type material. Less than 2,000 models of such type were ever made and was the only part solid roof Spider until the introduction of the factory crafted hard top. The 1300 and 2000 cars were modified in 1974 and 1975 respectively to include two small seats behind the front seats, becoming a "two plus two" four seater. The 1300 model was discontinued in 1977. Also, between 1974 and 1976, the early-style stainless-steel bumpers were discontinued and replaced with black, rubber-clad units to meet increasingly stringent North American crash requirements. Series 2 Spider 2000 Veloce. Spider Coda Tronca [edit] Series 3 Spider (1982/83-1989/90) Third generation Spider "Aerodinamica" Production 1982–1990 Engine(s) 1.6 L I4 2.0 L I4 Transmission(s) 5-speed manual Wheelbase 88.6 in (2,250 mm) Length 168.8 in (4,288 mm) Width 64.1 in (1,628 mm) Height 48.8 in (1,240 mm) The Series 3 Spider was previewed in North America for the 1982 model year with the introduction of 2.0 liter Bosch electronic fuel injection to replace the SPICA mechanical injection. The Spider underwent a major styling revamp in 1983, which saw the introduction of black rubber front and rear bumpers. The front bumper incorporated the grille and a small soft rubber spoiler was added to the trunk lid. The change altered the exterior appearance of the car considerably and was not universally praised by enthusiasts. Various other minor mechanical and aesthetic modifications were also made, and the 1600 car (never available in North America) dropped the "Junior" name. The Quadrifoglio Verde (Green Fourleaf Clover) model was introduced in 1986, with many aesthetic tweaks, including sideskirts, mirrors, new front and rear spoilers, hard rubber trunk mounted spoilers with integral 3rd stoplight and optional removable hardtop. It was otherwise mechanically identical to the standard Spider Veloce model, with a 1962 cc double overhead cam, four-cylinder engine (twin two-barrel carburetors in Europe; North American models retained the Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection introduced for the 1982 model year except that the VVT mechanism was now L-Jet activated) and five-speed manual transmission.[8] The interior was revised with a new center console, lower dash panels (to meet U.S. regulations) and a single monopod gauge cluster (with electronic gauges). For the North American market a model dubbed the Graduate was added in tribute to the car's famous appearance in the 1967 film, The Graduate, starring Dustin Hoffman. The Graduate was intended as a less expensive "entry-level" Alfa. While it had the same engine and transmission as the Quadrifoglio and Spider, it lacked the alloy wheels and luxury features of the other two models. The Graduate model had manual windows, basic vinyl seats, a vinyl top, and steel wheels as standard. Air conditioning and a dealer-installed radio were the only options. It first appeared in 1985 in North America and continued until 1990. Minor changes occurred from 1986–89, including new paint colors, a center high mount stop lamp (CHMSL) midway through 1986 for North American models, a move away from the fade-prone brown carpet and new turn signal levers. Some 1988 models featured automatic seatbelts that extended from a large device between the front seats. Spider Veloce (North America). Spider 3rd series. Spider 3rd series Quadrifoglio Verde version with optional hard top. [edit] Series 4 Spider (1990/91-1993) Fourth generation Spider "Type 4" in the rare "Vinaccia Red". Production 1990–1993 Engine(s) 2.0 L I4 Transmission(s) 5-speed manual 5-speed automatic Wheelbase 88.6 in (2,250 mm) Length 167.7 in (4,260 mm) Width 63.9 in (1,623 mm) Height 49.7 in (1,262 mm) The final major change to the Spider came in 1990. The primary mechanical change was that the Spider was given Bosch Motronic electronic fuel injection with an electric fan.[8] Externally, the Spider lost its front under-bumper spoiler and the rear trunk-lid spoiler and picked up 164-style rear lights stretching across the width of the car as well as plastic bumpers the same color as the car. This also marked the first generation of this car with automatic transmission. In North America, the styling changes did not appear until the 1991 model year; 1990 models featured the Motronic fuel injection but retained the black bumpers. Power steering, larger knee bolsters and a driver-side airbag also appeared as standard for North American market Spiders, which were available in two configurations: Spider and Spider Veloce. Primary differences were in standard equipment: the Veloce substituted leather seats for the base model's vinyl; 15" alloy wheels were one size up from the standard steel wheels with hubcaps; and air conditioning and a cloth top were standard. Production of the original Spider ended in 1993. An all-new Alfa Spider arrived one year later. A limited edition Spider Commemorative Edition was produced for the North American market in 1993 and was badged as a 1994 model. Each of the 190 Spider CEs imported to the United States had a small plaque affixed to the dashboard that identified which of the 190 cars it was.[2] The CEs differed from previous Spiders in that they had a special badge on the nose, a "CE" script badge below the "Spider Veloce" badge on the tail, unique gold center caps on the "phonedial" 15" wheels, and burled wood interior trim. Each model came with a leather portfolio, numbered keychain, and documentation. The cars followed the VIN sequence 008276 to 008460, although there does not appear to be any systematic order numbering. It appears that all of the 1994 Spider Commemorative Editions were produced in May 1993. Spider 4th series side profile. Spider 4th series top closed. Spider 4th series showing the new rear end. It was one of his first major projects for Bertone, and borrowed heavily from his earlier design for the Alfa Romeo 2000 Sprint/2600 Sprint. The balance of glass and metal, the influence of the shape of the front and rear glass on the shape of the cabin, and the flat grille with incorporated headlamps were groundbreaking styling features for the era. A limited production (1000 units) convertible, the Giulia Sprint GTC, was a modification from the standard car by Touring of Milan, offered as a catalogue model by Alfa Romeo called the Giulia Sprint GTC. A small number of the GT Junior models were also built with a very different, aerodynamic two-seater coupe body designed by Ercole Spada for Zagato of Milan. These too were offered by Alfa Romeo as catalogue models, as the GT 1300 Junior Zagato and later GT 1600 Junior Zagato. [edit] Mechanical features All models feature the four cylinder, all-light-alloy Alfa Romeo Twin Cam engine in various cubic capacities from 1290 cc to 1962 cc, all with two valves per cylinder. All versions of this engine fitted to the 105 series coupes featured twin carburettors, except for US market 1750 GTV and 2000 GTV cars which were fitted with fuel injection. Competition models featured cylinder heads with twin spark plugs. Common to all models was also a 5-speed manual transmission and disc brakes on all four wheels. The rear suspension uses a beam axle with coil springs. Air conditioning and a limited slip rear differential were optional on the later models. 1972 GTV in a vintage race at Watkins Glen International. The various different models in this range can be considered in two broad categories. On one hand were the various Gran Turismos and Gran Turismo Veloces (veloce is Italian for "fast"). These were meant to be the most sporting cars in the Alfa Romeo range and sold very well to enthusiastic motorists around the world. The first model available was the Giulia Sprint GT (1963) which evolved into the Giulia Sprint GT Veloce (1965), the 1750 GTV (1968) and the 2000 GTV (1972–1976), with engines increasing in cubic capacity from 1570 cc (Giulia Sprint GT/GTV) through 1779 cc (1750 GTV) to 1962 cc (2000 GTV). A limited production (1000 units) convertible, the Giulia Sprint GTC, was based on the Giulia Sprint GT, modified by Touring of Milan. It was only made over two years from 1964 to 1966. On the other hand was the GT Junior range, which featured engines with smaller cubic capacities. GT Juniors sold in great numbers to people who wanted a sporting, stylish car that handled well, but either did not require the maximum in engine power, or could not afford the taxation on larger engine capacities in some markets - most notably, Alfa Romeo's home Italian market. Junior models began with the first GT 1300 Junior in 1966. The GT 1300 Junior continued until 1976 with the 1290 cc engine and various modifications incorporating features from the evolution of the GT's and GTV's. From 1972 a GT 1600 Junior model was also available, with the 1570 cc engine. The 1300 Junior and 1600 Junior also became available with a very different, aerodynamic two-seater coupe body designed by Ercole Spada for Zagato of Milan. These models were the GT 1300 Junior Zagato and GT 1600 Junior Zagato. Both categories were used to derive GTA ("Allegerita", or "lightened") models, which were specifically intended for competition homologation in their respective engine size classes. The GTA's featured extensive modifications for racing, so they were priced much higher than the standard models and sold in much smaller numbers. Practically all GTA's made were used in competition, where they had a long and successful history in various classes and category. These models included the Giulia Sprint GTA, GTA 1300 Junior, and GTAm (a much evolved version of the GTA built by Autodelta)[2]. Although not commonly thought of as a 105 Series coupe variant, the Alfa Romeo Montreal used a strengthened and slightly modified 105 series floorpan and suspension. [edit] GT and GTV models [edit] Giulia Sprint GT (1963–1966) Tipo: 105.02. Motore: 00502. Giulia Sprint GT Manufacturer Alfa Romeo Production 1963–1966 Body style(s) 2-door coupé Engine(s) 1.6L DOHC I4 Curb weight 948 kg (2,090 lb)[3] The Giulia Sprint GT was the first model introduced, and was manufactured from 1963 to 1966. It featured the original form of the Bertone body with the scalina (stepped) or "step front" (the leading edge of the hood/bonnet sat 1/4 an inch above the nose of the car). It can be most easily distinguished from other models by the following features: Badging: chrome script reading "Giulia Sprint GT" on bootlid, one round Alfa Romeo badge on the grille heart, Bertone badges behind the front wheelarches. Flat, chrome grille featuring a plain rectangular mesh with no bars. Single-piece chrome bumpers Dashboard with a flat, tilted panel finished in grey crackle. The car was fitted with the 1570 cc displacement version of the engine (78 mm bore × 82 mm stroke, 6.38 L oil sump, 7.41 L radiator). Dunlop disc brakes were fitted all around. The rear brakes featured an unusual arrangement with the slave cylinders mounted on the axle tubes, operating the calipers by a system of levers and cranks. 31,955 Sprint GTs were produced. The car was based on the Giulia Sprint GT, with the cabriolet modification carried out by Touring of Milan. Besides the cabriolet top, a distinguishing feature is the dashboard finished in black instead of grey crackle. The model was badged with a script reading "Giulia Sprint GTC" on the bootlid. To restore some of the bodyshell rigidity lost by removing the fixed roof and pillars, Carrozzeria Touring added reinforcement to several areas of the bodyshell. Through the production life of the model, several modifications to the reinforcement applied were made by Touring, apparently in an effort to improve the stiffening achieved. Carrozzeria Touring was in financial trouble when the Giulia Spring GTC went into production. The company went out of business shortly after production of this model ended. [edit] Giulia Sprint GT Veloce (1965–1968) Tipo: 105.36. Right hand drive tipo: 105.37. Motore: 00536. Giulia Sprint GT Veloce (GTV) Manufacturer Alfa Romeo Production 1965–1968 Predecessor Giulia Sprint GT Successor 1750 GTV Body style(s) 2-door coupé Engine(s) 1.6L DOHC I4 Transmission(s) 5-speed synchromesh Length 4,089 mm (161.0 in)[6] Width 1,575 mm (62.0 in)[6] Height 1,321 mm (52.0 in)[6] Curb weight 1,012 kg (2,230 lb)[6] The Giulia Sprint GT Veloce was very similar to the original Giulia Sprint GT. It featured minor modifications to the engine, providing just 3 bhp more power, but significantly improved torque. It can be most easily distinguished from other models by the following features: Badging as per Giulia Sprint GT, with two additions: Round enamel badges on the C-pillar with a Green quadrifoglio (cloverleaf) on an ivory background, and chrome "Veloce" script on rear panel. Grille with black mesh and 3 horizontal chrome bars. Dashboard with tilted flat panel as on the Giulia Sprint GT but with imitation woodgrain instead of grey crackle finish (first seen on the GT 1300 Junior). Front seats revised to a mild "bucket" design. Grille heart has 7 bars instead of 6. Stainless steel bumpers, as opposed to the chromed mild steel bumpers on the Giulia Sprint GT. The bumpers are the same shape, but made in two pieces (front) and three pieces (rear) with small covers hiding the joining rivets. Early Giulia Sprint GT Veloces featured the same Dunlop disk brake system as the Giulia Sprint GT. Later cars replaced this with the ATE disk brakes as pioneered on the GT 1300 Junior in 1966. The ATE brakes featured an interesting and more effective handbrake system on the rear brakes, which incorporated drum brakes inside the disk castings. A total of 14,240 Giulia Sprint GT Veloces were made before production finished. [edit] 1750 GT Veloce (1967–1971) Tipo: 105.44. Right hand drive tipo: 105.45. Motore: 00548 U.S. tipo: 105.51. Motore: 00571. 1750 GT Veloce (GTV) Production 1967–1971 Body style(s) 2-door coupé Engine(s) 1.8L DOHC I4[7] Wheelbase 2,350 mm (92.5 in)[7] Length 4,089 mm (161.0 in)[7] Width 1,575 mm (62.0 in)[7] Height 1,321 mm (52.0 in)[7] Curb weight 1,038 kg (2,288 lb)[7] The 1750 GTV appeared in 1967 along with the 1750 Berlina sedan and 1750 Spider. The same type of engine was used to power all three versions; this rationalisation was a first for Alfa Romeo. The 1750 GTV replaced the Giulia Sprint GT Veloce and introduced many updates and modifications. Most significantly, the engine capacity was increased to 1779 cc displacement (80 mm bore × 88.5 mm stroke, 6.61l oil capacity, 9.58l radiator capacity). Peak power from the engine was increased to 122 PS (90 kW; 120 hp) at 5500 rpm. The stroke was lengthened from 82 to 88.5 mm over the 1600 engine, and a reduced rev limit from 7000 rpm to 6000 rpm. Maximum torque was increased to 186 N·m (137 lb·ft) at 3000 rpm. A higher ratio final drive was fitted (10/41 instead of 9/41) but the same gearbox ratios were retained. The result was that, on paper, the car had only slightly improved performance compared to the Giulia Sprint GT Veloce, but on the road it was much more flexible to drive and it was easier to maintain higher average speeds for fast touring. For the United States market, the 1779 cc engine was fitted with a fuel injection system made by Alfa Romeo subsidiary SPICA, to meet emission control laws that were coming into effect at the time. Carburettors were retained for other markets. The chassis was also significantly modified. Tire size went to 165/14 from 155/15 and wheel size to 5 1/2J x 15 instead of 5J x 15, giving a wider section and slightly smaller rolling diameter. The suspension geometry was also revised, and an anti-roll bar was fitted to the rear suspension. ATE disk brakes were fitted from the outset, but with bigger front disks and calipers than the ones fitted to GT 1300 Juniors and late Giulia Sprint GT Veloces. The changes resulted in significant improvements to the handling and braking, which once again made it easier for the driver to maintain high average speeds for fast touring. The 1750 GTV also departed significantly from the earlier cars externally. New nose styling eliminated the "stepped" hood of the Giulia Sprint GT, GTC, GTA and early GT 1300 Juniors and incorporated four headlamps. United States market 1750 GTV's also featured larger rear light clusters. Besides the chrome "1750" badge on the bootlid, there was also a round Alfa Romeo badge. Similar Quadrofoglio badges to those on the Giulia Sprint GT Veloce were fitted on C pillars, but the Quadrofoglio was coloured gold instead of green. The car also adopted the higher rear wheelarches first seen on the GT 1300 Junior. The interior was also much modified over that of earlier cars. There was a new dashboard with large speedometer and tachometer instruments in twin binnacles closer to the driver's line of sight. The instruments were mounted at a more conventional angle, avoiding the reflections caused by the upward angled flat dash of earlier cars. Conversely, auxiliary instruments were moved to angled bezels in the centre console, further from the driver's line of sight than before. The new seats introduced adjustable headrests which merged with the top of the seat when fully down. The window winder levers, the door release levers and the quarterlight vent knobs were also restyled. The remote release for the boot (trunk) lid, located on the inside of the door opening on the B-post just under the door lock striker, was moved from the right hand side of the car to the left hand side. The location of this item was always independent of whether the car was left hand drive or right hand drive. Early (Series 1) 1750 GTV's featured the same bumpers as the Giulia Sprint GT Veloce, with the front bumper modified to mount the indicator / sidelight units on the top of its corners. The Series 2 1750 GTV of 1970 introduced other mechanical changes, including a dual circuit braking system (split front and rear, with separate servos). The brake and clutch pedals on left hand drive cars were also of an improved pendant design, instead of the earlier floor-hinged type. On right hand drive cars the floor-hinged pedals were retained, as there was no space for the pedal box behind the carburettors. Externally, the series 2 1750 GTV is identified by new, slimmer bumpers with front and rear overriders. The combined front indicator and sidelight units were now mounted to the front panel instead of the front bumper. The interior was slightly modified, with the seats retaining the same basic outline but following a simpler design. 44,269 1750 GTVs were made before their replacement came along.[1] [edit] 2000 GT Veloce (1971–1976) Tipo: 105.21. Right hand drive tipo: 105.22. U.S. tipo: 11501. Motore: 01500. 2000 GT Veloce (GTV) Production 1971–1976 Body style(s) 2-door coupé Engine(s) 2.0L DOHC I4[8] Wheelbase 2,350 mm (92.5 in)[8] Length 4,089 mm (161.0 in)[8] Width 1,575 mm (62.0 in)[8] Height 1,321 mm (52.0 in)[8] Curb weight 1,028 kg (2,266 lb)[8] The 2000 GTV was introduced in 1971 together with the 2000 Berlina sedan and 2000 Spider. The 2000 range was the replacement for the 1750 range. Once again the engine was rationalized throughout the range. The engine displacement was increased to 1962 cc with a change of the bore and stroke to 84 mm × 88.5 mm. Oil and radiator capacities remained unchanged. The engine produced 132 PS (97 kW; 130 hp) at 5500 rpm with the SPICA fuel injection, which, once again, was only fitted to cars destined for the United States market, with carburetors retained for other markets producing 152 PS (112 kW; 150 hp). The interior trim was also changed, with the most notable differences being the introduction of a separate instrument cluster, instead of the gauges installed in the dash panel in earlier cars. The 2000 GTV is most easily distinguished by its different grille. From 1974 on, this became standard on the GT 1300 Junior and GT 1600 Junior as well. Externally the 2000 GTV is most easily distinguished by the following features: Grille with horizontal chrome bars, featuring protruding blocks forming the familiar Alfa heart in outline. Smaller hubcaps with exposed wheel nuts. Optional aluminum alloy wheels of the same size as the standard 5. 1/2J × 14 steel items, styled to the "turbina" design first seen on the alloy wheels of the Alfa Romeo Montreal. "Turbina" refers to the wheel's resemblance to a jet engine inlet. The larger rear light clusters first fitted to United States market 1750 GTV's were standard for all markets on the 2000 GTV. From 1974 on, the 105 Series coupe models were rationalized and these external features became common to post-1974 GT 1300 Junior and GT 1600 Junior models, with only few distinguishing features marking the difference between models. See below. 37,459 2000 GTVs were made before production ended[9]. [edit] GT Junior models 1968 GT 1300 Junior [edit] GT 1300 Junior (1965–1977) Tipo: 105.30. Right hand drive tipo: 105.31. Motore: 00530. Motore, 1974 on: 00530*S. GT 1300 Junior Manufacturer Alfa Romeo Production 1965–1977 Body style(s) 2-door coupé Engine(s) 1.3L DOHC I4 Length 4,080 mm (160.6 in)[10] Width 1,580 mm (62.2 in)[10] Height 1,310 mm (51.6 in)[10] Curb weight 930 kg (2,100 lb)[10] The GT 1300 Junior was the entry model to the Alfa Romeo coupe range. It was introduced in 1965 as the replacement for the 101 series Giulia Sprint 1300, which was the final development of the Giulietta Sprint series. The GT 1300 Junior was fitted with the 1300 (1290 cc) twin cam engine (74 mm bore × 75 mm stroke), as fitted to the Giulietta series cars, but revised for the 105 series with reduced port sizes and other modifications. The smaller engine was introduced in order to allow buyers to choose an Alfa Romeo coupe while avoiding the higher taxes on the models with larger engine capacity, especially in Alfa Romeo's home Italian market. The performance was low-end compared to others in its model line, with a total of 89 bhp (66 kW; 90 PS).[11] However, the GT 1300 Junior's top speed of over 100 mph and 0-60 mph time of 12.6 seconds were very good for a fully-appointed coupe with an engine of only 1300 cc displacement. The GT 1300 Junior was in production for over a decade. Throughout this period it was updated by the factory, incorporating many of the same revisions applied to the larger-engined models. The first GT 1300 Juniors produced were based on the Giulia Sprint GT, with a simpler interior. The major external identifying feature was the black grille with just one horizontal chrome bar. The same 9/41 final drive ratio was maintained, but with a shorter 5th gear ratio of 0.85, instead of 0.79 as on all the other 105 Series coupes. Together with the Giulia 1300 Ti, the GT 1300 Junior pioneered the use of ATE disk brakes as later fitted throughout the 105 series, replacing the Dunlop disks on earlier cars. The first few GT 1300 Juniors lacked a brake servo, and had the low rear wheelarches of the Giulia Sprint GT and Giulia Sprint GTV. From 1967, a servo was fitted as standard, together with higher rear wheelarches as adopted later on the 1750 GTV. In 1968, concurrently with the replacement of the Giulia Sprint GT Veloce by the 1750 GTV, the GT 1300 Junior was revised with many of the new parts from the 1750 GTV. This included the dashboard, the suspension and the new wheel size of 5½ × 14J instead of 4½ × 15J. This revised GT 1300 Junior, however, retained the early "step-front" body style, which, interestingly, makes it the most mechanically refined production "step-front" model. Another intriguing detail is that, just as on the 1750 GTV, the remote release for the boot (trunk) lid, located on the inside of the door opening on the B-post just under the door lock striker, was moved from the right hand side of the car to the left hand side. The location of this item was always independent of whether the car was left hand drive or right hand drive. This series of GT 1300 Junior was the only model with the step-front bodyshell to have this item mounted on the left hand side. All other step-front models - Giulia Sprint GT, Giulia Sprint GT Veloce, and early GT 1300 Junior with flat dashboard - featured this item on the right hand side. From 1968 on, Alfa Romeo models for the US market were fitted with fuel injection systems instead of carburettors to comply with emissions control legislation. The only 105 Series models in which the classic twin-cam engine was fitted with fuel injection were the US market 1750 range, and the US market 2000 range which replaced the 1750s in 1972. No Alfa Romeo 1300 or 1600cc models were ever made with fuel injection. In 1970 the Junior was revised a second time, and received the same nose treatment as the 1750 GTV, without the step but with only two headlights. For 1972, new wheels featuring smaller hubcaps with exposed wheel nuts like those on the 2000 GTV were fitted. At the same time, the GT 1600 Junior was introduced alongside the GT 1300 Junior. The GT 1300 Junior was discontinued for the right hand drive UK market but continued to be available in other right hand drive markets. From 1974 the GT1300 Junior and GT1600 Junior were both rationalised into a common range with the 2000 GTV. See below. [edit] GT 1600 Junior (1972–1976) Tipo: 115.03. Right hand drive tipo: 105.05. GT 1600 Junior Manufacturer Alfa Romeo Production 1972–1976 Body style(s) 2-door coupé Engine(s) 1.6L DOHC I4 The GT 1600 Junior was introduced in 1972, to plug the gap between the GT 1300 Junior and the larger-engined 2000 GTV. In the UK right-hand-drive market the GT 1300 Junior was dropped, but in many other markers the two models were available as a range. The engine was substantially the same as that of the Giulia Sprint GTV discontinued four years previously, and had the same engine type number. The final drive ratio was again 9/41 as standard on all 105 Series coupes with the 1290 cc and 1570 cc engine. From 1974 on, the GT 1300 Junior and GT 1600 Junior were rationalised into a common range of models with the 2000 GTV, sharing most of the interior and exterior features with the larger-engined car. The only exterior differences were no bumper over-riders, lack of C-pillar green serpent badges, and GT 1300 Junior or GT 1600 Junior badge on the boot. Apart from the engine size, the only mechanical differences were: smaller front brakes, as the Juniors had not adopted the larger units fitted to the 1750 GTV and 2000 GTV from 1968 on, differential ratios (Junior models 4.55:1, 2000 GTV 4.1:1) and 5th gear ratio (GT 1300 Junior 0.85:1, all other Alfa Romeo 105 models 0.79:1).[12]. The GT Junior has a tight suspension and weighed in at just 2,050 pounds (930 kg). Because of this, the car would often go onto three wheels, lifting the inside front wheel off the road when driven enthusiastically. Production ended in 1976 and totalled 80623 units. [edit] GT 1300 Junior Zagato (1969-72) & GT1600 Junior Zagato (1972-76) Tipo: 105.93. Motore: 00530. (1300). Junior Zagato The GT 1300 Junior Zagato was a limited production two seater coupe with aerodynamic bodywork by Zagato of Milan. The model evoked the earlier, race-oriented Giulietta Sprint Zagatos which featured aluminium bodywork and had a very active competition history. However, the Junior Zagato was not specifically intended for racing. It featured steel bodywork, and did not see much use in competition. With the introduction GT 1600 Junior in 1972, a GT 1600 Junior Zagato was also introduced. [edit] GTA models Main article: Alfa Romeo GTA [edit] Giulia Sprint GTA (1965–1969) Tipo: 105.32 (Alfa Romeo), 105.02/A (IGM homologation). Right hand drive tipo: 105.34. Motore: 00502/A or 00532/A (identical save for no. prefix.) Giulia Sprint GTA, factory standard The GTA retained the external form of the Giulia Sprint GT, but was constructed with aluminum external panels replacing the standard steel panels. The 'A' stood for "Alleggerita", Italian for "lightened". The engine was based on that of the standard 1600 cc car with a new, twin-plug head and Weber 45DCOE carburettors. The sump, camshaft cover, timing cover and clutch housing were in lightweight magnesium alloy instead of the standard aluminium alloy. Many other measures were also taken to lighten the car, and tune it for racing. All GTA's had the lower rear wheelarches as fitted to the Giulia Sprint GT's and GTV's, and very early GT 1300 Juniors. The GTA was available from the factory as a high-performance car for the road or racing. Unmodified cars in factory trim have come to be known as "GTA Stradale" but few were sold in this form. Most customers were racers and had them further modified and tuned before delivery by Autodelta, which had become a wholly-owned Alfa Romeo subsidiary running its competition department. [edit] GTA 1300 Junior (1968–1973) Tipo: 105.59. Motore: 00559. GTA 1300 Junior, racing modified The GTA 1300 Junior (Tipo 105.59) was based on the early step-front GT 1300 Junior, incorporating the same modifications as the GTA. Its engine was not based on the standard 1300 cc motor but was instead a GTA engine with the same bore but a shorter stroke (67.5 instead of 82 mm). Unlike the GTA, the GTA 1300 Junior featured the higher rear wheelarches as first seen on the GT 1300 Junior and later adopted for the 1750 GTV. Once again the GTA 1300 Junior was available as a standard car from Alfa Romeo, but most were modified by Autodelta for racing before delivery. [edit] GTAm Unlike the Giulia Sprint GTA and GTA 1300 Junior, The GTAm was not built by Alfa Romeo, was never available from the factory and was never issued its own Tipo number. It was built by Autodelta and was based on the 1750 GTV. Once again the engine had a special cylinder head with twin spark plugs, but this time the head was to a new design departing significantly from the standard engine in having a much smaller included angle between the valves. More the Versace to everyone else's Brunel. But not with the MiTo - it's the least attractive Alfa and with new MultiAir engines, it's now one of the most technically advanced. As with all brilliant engineering solutions, the MiTo MultiAir offers an obvious answer and comes from the same guys who pioneered common rail fuel injection on the 156. Most engines have a cam which is the mechanical link between the crank shaft and the valves - you can make this connection complicated with variable valve timing, but up until now you couldn't time the valves independently of the cam. If you wanted a performance cam, you needed to leave the valves open for longer - fine for flat out driving, but you'd be wasting fuel in normal use. What Alfa Romeo has done is to introduce an electronically controlled hydraulic link between the cam and the valves so that you get infinitely variable valve timing, because the electronics have replaced the cam as the brain of the valves. In the MultiAir, all the cam does is work the exhaust valves and provide the pressure for the hydraulics. So now when you press the throttle you don't work a butterfly in the throttle body, you control the valves via the ECU. MultiAir has ditched the pressure losses that butterfly valves create and made everything flexible and efficient. The MiTo has a 1.4-litre turbo that gives decent outputs (133bhp and 133lb ft) but is also capable of scaling itself right back so that CO2 and mpg are better. It works brilliantly. Official figures put it at 50.7mpg and 129g/km and bothare impressive for a petrol, albeit a small capacity one, and are about 10 per cent better than the ‘normal' engines. NOx emissions fall by a whopping 60 per cent. Incidentally, even though the MiTo has been out for under a year, all bar the low-powered petrols will be replaced by MultiAir units - 104bhp, this one and a 167bhp. You can't feel any difference, apart from the turbo. Because pressure losses have been eliminated, this doesn't have to boost pressure as much, which means lag is almost non-existent. Alfa has patented the tech this time around - it didn't with common-rail and look how ubiquitous that became. If the reaction of an engineering pal of mine is anything to go by, MultiAir is heading the same way. Piers Ward Now share it More More Alfa Romeo MiTo cars we've driven...
