It was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Italdesign Giugiaro. The concept version was powered with a Maserati V8 engine producing around 400 PS (290 kW; 390 hp).[3] The Brera was widely acclaimed, and production plans were subsequently announced for 2005. The Brera concept car [edit] Production The Alfa Romeo Brera was introduced in production form at the 2005 Geneva Motor Show. It maintained the original's exterior appearance almost exactly but on a much smaller scale, becoming a mid-size coupe on the GM/Fiat Premium platform (shared with the Alfa Romeo 159), and designed to replace the outgoing GTV. A convertible Spider version of the Brera was also announced, to be launched shortly after the coupe and to replace the existing GTV-based Spider. In Europe, the Brera is available with two petrol engines, the 185 PS (136 kW; 182 hp) 2.2-litre JTS and 260 PS (190 kW; 260 hp) 3.2-litre V6; and a 210 PS (150 kW; 210 hp) 2.4-litre JTD turbodiesel. Cars with the diesel or 2.2 petrol are front-wheel drive, whilst the V6 comes with a Torsen four-wheel drive system similar to the 156 and 159's Q4. For the "model year" 2008 Alfa Romeo Brera/Spider changes were made to the mechanics and the interiors of the cars. The 3.2 liter V6 version will now be offered in front wheel drive, as well as a four wheel drive version, allowing for a top speed of 250 kilometres per hour (160 mph). All model variants will be fitted with electronic Q2 limited slip differential. By using more aluminium parts a weight reduction of several kilos is achieved. These new versions were introduced at the Geneva Motor Show in 2008.[4] For "model year" 2009 Alfa Romeo is introducing a new turbocharged gas engine badged as "TBi", this 1742 cc unit has direct injection and variable valve timing in both inlet and exhaust cams. This new engine has 200 PS (147 kW; 197 hp) and 320 N·m (240 lb·ft) of torque.[5] A 230 PS (169 kW; 227 bhp) version of the "Tbi" 1.75 liter will also be available later in the year which will give Brera a 0–100 km/h (62 mph) time of about 7.3 seconds. [edit] Brera S Alfa Romeo Brera S In Spring 2008 the Brera 'S' Special Edition was announced. This Alfa Romeo-approved British-only limited-run version was developed by British engineering specialists Prodrive and was intended to address criticism regarding the handling of the standard car.[6] Selected suspension and chassis components and settings of the 'S' have been amended from the standard car, altering the handling characteristics.[7] Alfa Romeo and Prodrive had previously collaborated in motorsport, campaigning an Alfa Romeo 155 in the BTCC during 1994 and 1995.[8] [edit] Italia Independent In 2009, Alfa Romeo released a limited edition of the Brera in association with Italia Independent, an Italian design company. Limited to 900 units and named after Alfa Romeo's partner in the venture, the Italia Independent edition of the Brera was offered with opaque-finish "titanium" paintwork, 18" "turbine" style alloy wheels and an aluminium fuel-filler cap. The Italia Independent was offered with 136 kW (185 PS) 2.2 JTS or 191 kW (260 PS) 3.2 V6 petrol engines and six-speed transmission. Manual, "Selespeed" or automatic Q-Tronic transmission options were offered, and the V6 engined-car was also available with Alfa Romeo's Q4 all-wheel drive system.[9] [edit] Engines [edit] Petrol Model Engine Displacement Power Torque Comp. At the beginning there were two engine options available: the 2.2L straight-4 and 3.2L V6 JTS engines, and the JTD common rail turbodiesel was introduced at 2007 Geneva Motor Show. This car replaced Spider 916 model, introduced in 1995. This Spider version can be seen as 6th generation of Alfa Spiders, the first version of which was released in 1966. It’s Alfa’s new high-tech, down-sized petrol engine, which spearheads a challenge to get the 159 back on track as a genuine mid-sized sports saloon. There has also been plenty of work done to lift the 159 from its dynamic mediocrity into the sort of machine that more fulfils the adventure promised by its looks. The engine has had the legendary twin-spark head removed altogether in favour of modern direct-injection, while around 70kg has been stripped out of the architecture and the steering’s been tweaked for more feedback. What’s it like? See the Alfa Romeo 159 1750 TBi picture gallery Now sporting 197bhp out of the so-called 1750 four-cylinder turbo petrol engine (it’s actually a 1742cc engine, but they like the history of 1750), it’s a cleaner, crisper, sharper engine and, as a bonus, it’s faster, too. Yet there’s more than meets the eye, because this is the latest in the trend to downsize engines for economy while maintaining outputs, so when Alfa’s literature says it’s 100kg lighter, they actually mean that the saloon’s 1430kg is 100kg lighter than a similarly-powered V6… It doesn’t sound that much different when you fire it up, but it’s smoother in its feel and the few vibrations it has a charmingly warm, rather than tiring or annoying or distracting. In six-speed manual form it has become a very flexible mid-sizer. The new cylinder head, with seven-hole, direct-fuel injection and much-improved scavenging, has 70 per cent more torque at 1500rpm than the old engine did and that makes it nearly stall proof. Much like Audi’s turbo petrol power plants, Alfa seems to have gone out of its way to give the engine a diesel-esque feel at low rpm while trying to maintain the flinging feel of a petrol engine up high. While tuning the turbo helps, it’s also got variable inlet and exhaust timing and the frictional losses from its new roller rocker arms have reduced frictional losses at 2000rpm by 65 per cent over the twin-spark. Not only does it thump out a V6-like 236lb ft of torque at just 2000rpm, but the power peak doesn’t just come and go. Instead, it holds its torque peak for an eternity before the power takes over at 4750, then remain in charge all the way to 5500rpm. And that’s how it feels on the road, too. It sounds and feels strong and unburstable, it’s willing and flexible in any gear, and it really only sacrifices the elasticity of the last 500 revs to do it. It sprints to 62mph in 7.7 seconds, but the 159 still feels like a hefty piece of gear. It’s much better on the move, once the inertia has been overcome, pulling willingly to a 146mph top speed. It’s had a suspension fiddle as well and its direction changes have benefitted significantly from the diet. Ride quality on UK roads has become something of a thorny issue with Alfa, so while we’ll confirm that the car rode with comfort and security in Balocco, we’ll reserve final judgement until it turns up over here. After all, it might have been retuned, but it still sits on the original 159 hardware, so that means 17-inch rubber, a multi-link rear and double wishbones up front. Should I buy one? The 159 is a much better, lighter, more economical car than it was, but while the Alfa has moved on, the opposition has moved on as well, and often from a higher launch pad. It was behind the pace to start with and behind the pace of the class front runners it remains. But it’s much closer than it was and it’s a much better car in every respect. This I realised when I clambered into the latest addition to Alfa Romeo’s 159 range the other evening. Sat in the driver’s seat in the dark, I located the slot for the funky electronic ‘key’ easily enough, but then I was stumped. This wouldn’t have happened in, say, a VW, because most German cars seem to have the important switches and knobs in the same places. But in the Alfa I couldn’t find anything – not the switch for the lights, not the starter button, not even the interior light. I had visions of being marooned in a pitch-black car park for the night…Being so different is probably a good thing. If nothing else it proves that the 159 is more than just another 3-series clone with a fancy grille, and it puts it a step closer to being the baby Quattroporte that I really want it to be.This particular 159 is the 1750 TBi. It has a brand-new turbocharged 1742cc four-cylinder petrol engine that pumps a healthy 197bhp and 236lb ft to the front wheels, making this the fastest 159 you can buy after the 3.2 JTS V6. And sure enough it feels rapid from behind the wheel, with Alfa quoting 7.7sec to 62mph and a 147mph top speed. The ride is streets ahead of other 159s I’ve experienced, and the new engine helps here too, as it has been designed to be as light as possible – this 1750 TBi unit weighs 110kg less than the V6 and over 140kg less than the popular 2.4 JTDm diesel. With the mass over the front wheels reduced and better damping, this car doesn’t suffer from the terminal understeer found in other 159 incarnations. But then things starts to go a bit wobbly. Sadly, there doesn’t seem to be any of the old Alfa sparkle on offer anywhere. OK, it’s a good- looking car, especially when viewed head-on, but where, for example, is the addictive crackle from the twin-tailpipe exhaust? The only noise I’ll remember this Alfa for will be the excessive tyre roar, not the waspish engine snarl I was hoping for. The interior is starting to feel a bit dated too. In the end, any thoughts of this being a bite-sized QP evaporate away.I want to love this Alfa but can’t. It might be the best-driving 159 in the range but, for the moment, only Alfisti need apply. Yes No View Results Search Alfa Romeo 159 1750 TBi Elegante road test report 1750 TBi Elegante Alfa’s sleek and sassy 159 first went on sale in 2006 with a range of five different engines, but there’s now a new 2.0JTDM turbodiesel as well as this new 1750 TBi turbopetrol. Boasting improved power and efficiency over the outgoing 2.2JTS, the TBi is a real charmer. Alfa Romeo 159 lease prices Alfa Romeo 159 new and nearly new Performance Decent performance is a traditional Alfa strong point, and the 200bhp TBi competently maintains that reputation. For a 1,742cc 4-cyl, 6-speed manual saloon the claimed figures are impressive enough – 0-62mph in 7.7secs, 147mph max, but it’s the TBi motor’s 236lb/ft of torque and throttle response which are perhaps most impressive. Get on the gas at 80mph in 6th gear and there’s instant, strong acceleration up to 120mph and beyond. This sub 2-litre four goes like a 3-litre six, and it has the brakes to match, but my test car lacked puff and was prone to stalling while pulling away slowly from a standstill. Ride & Handling Hard-driving purists would argue that front wheel drive can never be a match for rear drive, but in the real world on public roads this front-drive 159 would please even the most hardcore enthusiast. Its steering is unusually quick and direct, especially for a 4-door saloon, while its grip is terrifically tenacious. And this isn’t just down to grippy tyres; it’s due to a torsionally rigid and well-balanced chassis coupled with finely tuned suspension that limits body roll while also providing a supple ride over all but the very worst of road surfaces. Build Quality & Reliability Alfas aren’t perfect and never have been, but enthusiasts of the brand say that just adds to their charm. I know what they mean, but there’s little that’s charming about a twittering squeak from somewhere inside the front passenger door – a problem that surfaced, (and only on bumpy roads), toward the end of my near 1,500 mile roadtest. A trip to the dealers would doubtless have cured it, but it’s a blot on the 159’s otherwise spotless copybook. Alfa Romeo hasn’t featured in recent UK JD Power surveys, but encouragingly the brand tied with Mercedes for second spot in the German ’09 JD Power survey. Safety & Security With the full five EuroNCAP stars for occupant protection (along with 4 stars for child occupant protection) the 159 acquits itself well. It’s equipped as standard with ABS combined with Electronic Brake Distribution and Hydraulic Brake Assistance while Vehicle Dynamic Control unit enhances cornering stability. VDC is augmented by ASR which limits wheelspin during acceleration, and MSR to modulate braking torque when changing down through the gears. There’s also a Hill Holder function to facilitate smooth hill starts as well as eight airbags, ISOFIX child seat mountings, a fire protection system and central locking with alarm and immobiliser. Space & Practicality Larger adults seated in the rear may feel a little cramped in terms of legroom, but there’s no such problem in the front with ample space in every direction along with comfortable, supportive seats and ample seat and wheel adjustment. (I drove 662 miles in one day, and 1,500 miles over four days and remained completely comfortable throughout.) Boot capacity is a respectable 405 litres and, although satnav and leather seats are optional on the Elegante model, comfort is enhanced by the standard Blue&Me Bluetooth phone system, a USB port for mp3 players (or other USB devices), climate control aircon, cruise control and more. Ownership & Value It has to be said that £22,750 doesn’t seem extravagant for a near-150mph executive sports saloon. The TBi’s official combined mpg figure is 34.9, although on my high speed continental journey the trip computer recorded an average of 26.7mpg over 1,483 fast miles. Not record-breaking, but there’s always the 52.3mpg JTDM model… CO2 emissions are 189g/km, which equates to tax band J or £215 annual road tax while TBi service intervals are up from 18,000 to 21,000 miles along with Alfa’s 3-year, unlimited mileage warranty. But as Alfa owners generally let their hearts rule their heads these figures may not be that important, especially for a car this good to drive and this good looking.
