However, the most powerful petrol and diesel engines aren’t available in the relatively basic Turismo trim. Alfa’s 77bhp 1.4 petrol is the entry-level engine (and unique to the Junior), but there's a stronger 94bhp version, as well as two novel Multiair units that respond more keenly than conventional engines. Like the frugal 1.3 JDTm (the smaller of the two diesels), these also have stop-start systems to boost fuel economy and cut emissions. Even the 1.6 JTDm has impressive economy, given how quick it is. Above the most basic Junior trim is Turismo, which has air conditioning and lots of safety kit, but you’ll need to move up to Lusso to get alloy wheels, the fancy carbon-weave dashboard and leather trim on the steering wheel. Top Veloce models feature large 17” alloy wheels, a rear spoiler and sports bumper, as well as Bluetooth connectivity with a USB port. This is the Alfa Romeo Mito 1.6 JTDm, a direct rival to the multitalented Mini Cooper D. And with the 118bhp, 1.6-litre turbodiesel under the bonnet, the Alfa Mito 1.6 JTDm is an attractive package of economy and style, but it lacks the dynamic flair that makes the diesel Mini the enthusiast’s choice. The Alfa Romeo Mito also gets Alfa’s DNA technology. This is a software package that allows the driver to alter the car’s steering, throttle, suspension and traction control systems between dynamic, normal and all-weather. On this Mito 1.6 JTDm, and the range-topping Mito 1.4 TB155, choosing the dynamic setting also engages a turbo overboost facility. What’s it like? Though the JTDm powerplant is a fun engine to keep on the boil, the Alfa Mito 1.6 JTDm can feel laboured on the way up the rev range and requires regular use of the notchy, long-throw gearbox to maintain swift progress. With the dynamic setting selected the Alfa Mito loses its frustratingly sluggish throttle response and springy steering to become a much more entertaining drive, aided by Alfa Romeo’s Q2 electronic diff system, which does a convincing impression of a mechanical limited-slip diff and significantly helps mid-corner traction. Unfortunately the ride quality lets the Mito 1.6 JTDm down in most situations; only on the smoothest of surfaces does the ride really settle. While body control is good, the shock absorbers translate the asphalt’s topography into uncomfortable crashing and jarring in the cabin, even at normal town speeds. At least the ride settles on the motorway and allows the driver to enjoy the Mito 1.6 JTDm’s decent cruising ability. A well insulated cabin, accessible torque band and muted engine makes this Alfa Mito a very usable long-distance car, though more supportive seats would further improve the experience. There are plenty of other practical selling points, too, like a decent sized boot and enough space in the rear for two adults, though some might find it slightly claustrophobic in the back due to the small, high rear window. Should I buy one? We can see the argument for the Alfa Mito. The Mini is a better driver’s car, but if you’re bored by BMW’s take on the British icon, the Alfa is a fun and classy alternative. In truth the Alfa Romeo Mito 1.6 JTDm will sell on style first, but Alfa deserves credit for creating a likeable car, even if the high-temperature-washing-machine-accident looks are not to your taste. If the Alfa Mito’s looks are to your taste, and economy is more important than performance, then the 1.6 JTDm is an excellent choice. But if a Mito still appeals and adrenaline ranks higher than money on your priority list, look to the 1.4 turbocharged petrol models for a much more thrilling drive. Photographs: Simon Stuart-Miller for the Guardian Perhaps more than any other make of car, new Alfa Romeos tend to arrive on the scene trailing a crushing amount of historical baggage. There's a reflexive focus on the tradition, with its glorious images of old, invariably red spiders and shiny 105s, and before long, fully-formed adults start exchanging moist memories of the first time they sat in an Alfa. The theme that underlies this wistful nostalgia comes under the old gittish heading of "They don't make 'em like that any more". No, they don't, but they make them better nowadays than in the 80s, when each new Alfa seemed designed to make fans weep, and not with pleasure. The original 50s Giulietta was a handsome beast, chunky, shapely and cool – the kind of thing from which you could imagine Marcello Mastroianni emerging with a cigarette in his moody mush and an even moodier beauty on his arm.The new Giulietta isn't quite in that aesthetic league, but it's nonetheless an attractive car. The snub nose brings the most out of the famous triangle grille, lending the bonnet a kind of tough elegance, and its squat rear helps foster the impression that it's a sporty coupe. It's actually a five-door but the rear handles are cleverly hidden in the C pillar – too clever for many passengers, no doubt, who may find themselves patting the rear doors in the style of a mystified mime artist.Inside, the quality of the materials doesn't quite live up to the classicism of the style, but that's modernity in all its plastic prudence.I can't say I'm a fan of the DNA system of three different engine settings (Dynamic, Normal, All-weather) that's common to a variety of Alfas, if only because of the irritation of having to remember to put it on "Dynamic", the only mode that makes you hanker for the autostrada south of Naples. Still, it must be said that driving on "D" is safer than – and perhaps just as much fun as – driving on E.As a result of Alfa's MultiAir engine, it not only punches above its 1.4-litre volume, it's also reasonably parsimonious on petrol; less so on D.Perhaps, though, the Giulietta most excels in not being a VW. Because if you're looking to buy a car of this size, in this sector, then first stop is usually a Golf. The only possible criticism of a Golf – and one neatly satirised by its ad campaign – is that everyone's got one, or a car that looks almost exactly the same: it's all pragmatism and no romance. The Giulietta, however, is proudly and actively uninterested in imitating a Golf. It simply wants to gatecrash its market. It should be warmly welcomed to the party.Alfa Romeo Giulietta Lusso MultiAir 1.4 TB Price £20,190Top speed 135mphAcceleration 0-62mph in 7.8 secondsAverage consumption 48.7 mpgCO2 emissions 134 g/kmEco rating 7/10Bound for Caffè NeroIn a word Shakesperean Printable version Send to a friend Share Clip Contact us larger | smaller Email Close Recipient's email address Your first name Your surname Add a note (optional) Your IP address will be logged Share Close Short link for this page: http://gu.com/p/2y47y Digg reddit Google Bookmarks Twitter del.icio.us StumbleUpon Newsvine livejournal Facebook Mixx it!
