| ALFA ROMEO 159 LUSSO Sportwagon 1.9 JDtM. | For Sale is our Alfa Romeo 159. We have owned this since new (albeit it Pre-Delivery registered). It has ...> a full service history and is not due another service for about 13k or a year. It has recently had an oil change as recommended by the service schedule, this was at a Alfa Romeo specialist using Alfa approved Selenia synthetic oil. All 4 tyres have been changed recently and fitted with premium Continental tyres. | We both love this car and are only selling as we both now work in the local area, and use our other small car rather than use this for a 6 mile round-trip. This car has never once let us down. I bought it purely on looks and style and was worried as it was an Alfa. It has been absolutely faultless. I would not hestitate to buy another and the decision to sell this one has been a hard one. We are not desperate to sell so please do not waste yours and our valuable time with a an extremely low offer. | X

Selling a much loved car, new company car forces sale. Considered keeping both but the reality of using two cars is not that practical, hence reason for ...> sale. Car is a looker and still gains admiring glances along with the odd enthusiast whom requires to acknowledge the presence of such a car. In all the time and places I have visited whilst driving this car, I can say it is a rare day when you come across another Alfa 159 of any model type or colour, even rarer when you see a red 159 ti, which is the only colour and style that does this car the justice that it deserves. Please email or phone 0141 884 1395 in the evening Mon - Fri or anytime weekends for more information or to arrange viewing. Offers welcome from genuine buyers. I will add more photographs at the weekend if weather and time allow. X

| | 57 Alfa Romeo 147 Sport 1.9 JTDm 120HP - Limited Edition - Black - 47K - History .
Needs EASY Repair to N/S - Bargain Price - LOOK!
Hello and welcome to my listing. I know there is a lot of text, however I believe if you’re genuinely interested in the car you’ll take the time to ...> read and be appreciative of it! J Here I am selling my limited edition, Alfa Romeo 147 Sport, one of only 450 ever made. It is a 5 door in black, covering only 46k miles. (Still in use so may rise slightly) The cheapest cars on eBay are £5500-£6500 with comparable miles – mine really will be a steal for somebody. The car has not had any tasteless additions to it – everything on the car is as it was fitted in the factory. Unfortunately the car needs a minor repair, although i`ve been driving it for weeks as it stands, and it is a Category D as a result of a third party hitting me. I bought this car in June after searching long and hard for the right one. It is a pleasure to drive and benefits from a 120HP 1.9JTDM diesel engine, which is responsive yet economical, regularly returning up to 50mpg – over this if you are stick to a steady 60mph on a run as I have been doing! Exterior Features: Brushed aluminium Mirrors Subtle Factory Fitted Boot Spoiler Brushed Aluminium Bumper Inserts Grey Special Edition 17” alloys. Chrome Entry Handles Chrome Fog Light Surround Chrome Tail Pipe Interior Features Traction Control Air Conditioning Trip Computer Leather Multifunction Steering Wheel Aluminium Foot Pedals and Gear Knob CD Player Armrest Cup Holders x 2 and Coin / Card Tray Darkened Headlining Special Edition Sports Seats with Red Edging and Alfa Crest Stitching into Headrest PAS ABS RCL The V5 is in my name and has been since I bought the car. 5 Months Tax 5 Months MOT Service history from Alfa (3 stamps) and from my local garage since I’ve owned it. The car has all the books and manuals and a set of interior mats (not pictured) If you are a Manchester United fan (i`m not), the number plate may interest you – it reads MUFC if you take away the year suffix – this is completely by chance and it’s not a private plate. I will disclose the full registration on request to genuine buyers. This alone is probably worth something to the right person! The car was serving me really well until I was driving home in early January, and a third party pulled out and hit the passenger side of my car. I’ve been driving it ever since and will continue to do so until it’s sold. In all honesty, there isn’t an awful lot of damage, see the photos 7-12 - I’ve been as thorough as I can. (If you want more send me your e-mail - I have lots saved on the laptop) I’ve been told it’ll need: A Passenger Front Door A Rear Door (if it won’t repair) A Wing (or a repair to it) Sill section repair or replaced A tiny repair to the rear quarter A little DIY touch up to rear alloy. The lady that has hit me has gone through her insurance, and when the assessor came round to view the damage he told me it would be a Category D write off. The insurance company have given me a settlement for the repair costs and let me keep it, however I`ve opted to sell instead of organising the repair myself. I’m looking for a bigger car now, maybe a 3 series, so have decided to sell the Alfa. If you have something interesting you`re looking to sell, try me. (within eBay rules naturally.) Anyway, I’ve worked out you could literally repair the car for next to nothing using genuine Alfa parts from eBay. Everything bar the wing is the same on the 2001-2006 Alfa’s which are everywhere on eBay. If you can get a decent bodyshop to spray panels on the cheap, there’s a LOT of money in the car either for re-sale or driving yourself. Do your research on eBay and check my below findings out for yourself! - Doors are anywhere between £40-£70 each (there’s two in the same paint code as my car on eBay for £65 each delivered!) -A wing for £50 (brand new ones are only £110 delivered from Alfa) -The Sill section - breakers yards seem to want £30-40 for one if you don’t want to repair it Then factor in the miniscule repair to the rear quarter for around £50-£80, you can probably repair for £400-£500 (or less if you’re in the trade / know what you’re doing with a socket set!) It is in very clean condition, with the usual age related stonechips etc. for a late 57 plate car. I applied paint protector when I bought the car (similar to Autoglym Lifeshine) and it has been washed and hovered every week without fail. It’s never been smoked in, I have no kids so the rear seats are as new, and my two cats wouldn’t appreciate being given a ride in it! Obviously, I can’t offer a warranty and it’s sold as seen, being a category D write off. I encourage you to come and view the car regardless as it really will be a great car again once repaired. Any questions, or for more pictures, please call Pete on 07736 458602 or contact via eBay and I’ll get back to you with any answers. I am in the Oldham area but am willing to pick you up from stations / bus terminals if you’re travelling from afar. I require a 10% deposit via bank transfer or a cleared cheque, and the rest cash on collection to secure the car. I won`t ship abroad, don`t need agencies to help me sell, and promises of riches from Africa won`t be entertained. X

New Alfa Romeo JTDM car for sale |
| | 2008 ALFA ROMEO 159 TI 16V 1.9 JTDM RED .
Hi,up for sale with a very heavy heart is my dream car. I`ve wanted one of these from the day they started making them in 2007. I finally got this one ...> last year, and have now moved jobs and live 300 metres from my work, hence the very very reluctant sale.Dont mistake this model for one of the basic models with the small wheels and bland interior. This is the Ti model, with the best and highest spec of them all. 19" wheels, lowered suspension, Brembo brakes, side skirts, chrome mirrors and the red logo leather seats. The only option my car does not have is the factory sat nav, and by all accounts it is rubbish anyway. Please dont be put off by the high mileage, as I have been a mechanic for 23 years and do not buy rubbish. This car has a substantial full service history. It was a Lloydstsb district managers car before me and it did 2 journeys a week between Windsor and Newcastle. As you probably know, 95% of wear on an engine is in the first 3 minutes of start up. This car does not smoke in the slightest. It is mechanically in A1 condition. Everything that has needed doing has been done due to it being a Lloyds lease car.The cambelt kit was done at 82000 miles, and the clutch and dual mass flywheel were done at 87000 miles. These are the important ones to note. The only flaw with the car is the laquer which is peeling from the front bumper and edge of the bonnet due to stones on the motorway. There are no dents, car park dints or scratches at all.The Leather seats and interior are as new. The back seats look like they have never been sat in.The things that I have done to the car are:1: fitted a twin exit exhaust to make it look like the 2.4. (the 1.9 only has one tailpipe).2: one of the main problems with modern diesels are when the DPF`s (diesel particulate filter)block up and cause the engine to go into limp mode and is very costly to repair. Mainly caused by short journeys or town driving. I have had this removed and had a bypass pipe fitted, and at the same time had the engine remapped for more power and torque(and better mpg) to 195 bhp. The dpf software has been removed also. I did this to my previous SEAT Leon diesel as that one did block. The one I removed from this car is not blocked and will be available with the car if you want it, or I can refit it for you. There is a lot of literature about this problem on google, so go ahead and look up "DPF problems". This can never happen to my car now, and it is not an MOT requirement to have the DPF on the car. This was done by an Alfa Romeo specialist, not a back street garage. The car has many extras like the Blue and Me, which connects by bluetooth into your phone and you control your phone using the steering wheel controls and facia computer. It also has a USB connector in the glove box to play your music and stuff through. It has parking sensors, hill start brakes, auto wipers, auto lights, anti dazzle mirrors, remote deadlocking, electric folding mirrors, heated seats, electric everything, the list goes on. The picture speak for themselves. Please do not make any silly offers as this car with lower mileage would go for around £2000 more. And remember that the lower mileage ones will have done a lot of stop and starts, and the engine will probably be more worn than this one.Come and have a look before bidding, as you will love the car when you see it.I am a very honest and genuine ebayer, just look at my seller feedback. I do not buy or sell rubbish. The landline number in the advert is my work number. I do 4 days on and 4 days off, so call or text my mobile first and I will call you back.I will be looking for a VW transporter T5 once this sells to take my new motorbike to the track so if you have something I might like, let me know. Even better if its a Kombi van. Cash either way. Thanks for looking. X

Alfa Romeo JTD Engine Bay The Alfa Romeo JTD engine Ten years ago a revolution started and it was labelled JTD; the diesel engine had come of age. I know some of the most fervent petrol heads amongst the Alfisti will still not believe it and will be turning the page at about this point in the article but please, please do read on. I didn't believe that a diesel could be any good until I drove one, and now I have a 1.9 JTDm and love it, but I do have some petrol Alfa's as well! All JTD's are common rail diesels and they share a lot of design ideas with both the Twin spark and the JTS petrol engines. Rather than the old fashioned mechanical pump that both pressurises the fuel and times when the fuel is injected into the engine, the JTD has a high pressure pump that runs off the cam belt. This supplies fuel to a rail which is attached to all the injectors, hence the name "common rail diesel". The fuel in this rail is at massive pressures, around 21,000 psi as opposed to about 50 psi in a twin spark engine, so it is necessary to take extreme care when working with this system. From this "reservoir" the electronic fuel injectors, which work in a similar way to petrol injectors but are much more robust, squirt fuel directly into the combustion chamber in exactly the right amount at exactly the correct moment in time. The amount of diesel injected is calculated by a computer or "ECU" this takes data from the crank angle sensor, temperature sensor, air flow meter, fuel pressure sensor and air pressure sensor all of which are similar if not the same as the ones on petrol engines. From this data the ECU decides how much fuel to inject and when to inject it. You will have noticed by now that there are a lot of similarities between modern petrol and diesel engines and with the ever increasing compression ratios of petrol engines and direct injection on the JTS. I wonder how long it will be before car engines become multi fuel like some military vehicles are or at the least they will be able to take a much wider variety of fuel than they do at present. JTD engines are also turbo charged which helps to give the JTD its superb power output. The JTD has evolved into the JTDm, where "m" stands for multi jet. While this is also a common rail diesel it runs at slightly higher injection pressures than the original JTD and also has four valves per cylinder which are operated by twin overhead camshafts, this aids volumetric efficiency, the second camshaft being gear driven off the end of the first. The JTDm's major advance however came with the injectors, these can inject 10 times faster than the JTD's injectors and this allows them to inject fuel multiple times per power stroke of the engine. This is used to increase the efficiency of the fuel burn by injecting the fuel in various strategies, at low speed or cruise the engine gives a small pilot injection followed by one large one this helps to keep the engine very quiet however on full throttle it just injects once. The injection strategy is worked out by the engine ECU and this is all programmed by the engineers at Alfa Romeo. The very latest version of the JTDm also has a very clever self cleaning soot filter in the exhaust system to make the emissions even less harmful. This will leave only the NOx in the exhaust gasses and engineers are working on reducing these by injecting urea into the exhaust which to those of you who know is an interesting concept. The JTD engines respond very well to tuning as the turbo charger can be easily reprogrammed to keep forcing air into the engine. So unlike normally aspirated Alfa Romeo engines where it is quite difficult to get more air into the engine and therefore quite difficult to get more power from the engine, with the JTD it is simply a question of reprogramming the ECU to increase the boost pressure and get significant power gains although obviously if you use this power your fuel consumption goes down. I can still feel those petrol heads amongst you who have bothered to read this far saying "its all low down power" and you are correct with earlier JTD engines however with the 2.4 JTDm in the Brera and the 159 this is significantly changed and while it has masses of torque as the revs rise this transforms nicely into power; they are well worth trying. Having sung the JTD's praises it is probably best to give you a quick tour of the engine bay (see image):- 1. Fuel injectors, these have multiple injection holes round the nose of the injector and they use electro magnets to open and close the injection nozzle, they are controlled by the engine ECU which is in the passenger foot well. 2. Dip stick, used to check the oil level to be used REGULARLY on all Alfa engines. 3. Vacuum pump, Diesel engines don't have a throttle butterfly in the conventional sense and the inlet tract could theoretically be open to the air at idle so no vacuum would be produced, a vacuum is needed for the servo assistance on the brakes and to activate the turbo. 4. Fuel filter makes sure there are no particles getting through to the injectors and also separates out any water that might get into the system. There is also a lift pump in the fuel tank that primes the fuel filter 5. Throttle butterfly, having stated in 3 that diesels dont have throttle butterflies here we have one but it isnt here as a throttle. It is a flap that works in conjunction with the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve to "seal" the engine on over run so no new air is pumped through the engine thus reducing pollutants. Those of you with diesels especially m jets may have noticed a slight "pop" when you turn your engine off that is this valve closing. 6. Exhaust gas recirculation valve. 7. Pipe from intercooler, this pipe goes down to the intercooler in the inner wing which reduces the temperature of the air going into the engine making it more dense so you can get more air into the engine and increase its power output. 8. Turbo charger, somewhere down here is the turbo charger 9. Boost pressure sensor, this measures the temperature and pressure of the air going into the engine. 10. Andy Enright tries the 1.9 JTDm diesel version Has any coupe in recent years had a more unfair crack of the whip than Alfa's GT? I doubt it. It seems this car was a hot ticket for about ten minutes before the buzz moved onto something else. What's more, the launch of the Brera coupe has further diverted the spotlight from one of the most attractively-styled cars on sale today. Looking to rectify the balance somewhat, we took delivery of a 1.9-litre JTD diesel model to reassess this car's attributes. To this eye at least, the GT is a better proportioned vehicle than the Brera. Walk round the GT and you'll be hard pushed to find one bad angle whereas the Brera looks sensational from some angles but strangely lumpen from others. This GT also enjoys a fair price advantage over the Brera (around £6,000), although this diesel model is not directly comparable due to the fact that the newer car sports a 2.4-litre diesel whereas this makes do with 1.9-litres of JTDm engine. Hefty dealer discounting has made this car even better value, so that you should be able to secure one for comfortably less than you'd pay for something like a Golf GTI. But then you will have to make do with `just' 150 or 170bhp, although the powerplant is certainly modern enough. Model-wise, there's a choice of standard, Cloverleaf or Lusso models in 150bhp form, while those wanting the 170bhp version can opt for the Cloverleaf version. The desirable Q2 variant, which offers extra high performance grip thanks to its Torsen limited-slip differential, is available in 150 or 170bhp guises. Prices start at around £22,000. The Fiat Group, of which Alfa Romeo is a key constituent, was first to market with a direct injection diesel way back in 1986 and in 2005 was awarded the Economist Innovation Award for ground-breaking work in developing common-rail diesel technology. Alfa Romeo brought the first JTD common rail engine to the UK in 1997, plumbed into the front of an Alfa 156. The latest development is a sixteen-valve Multijet version of that engine which offers more power and reduced noise levels yet still posts competitive fuel economy and emissions figures. It's basically the same as the 140bhp unit offered in the pre-facelift 147 from summer 2003 but a revised injection strategy has boosted the output while reducing noise and vibration. "Drive an Alfa GT JTDM and you wonder how on earth this car managed to rack up such modest sales" The Multijet system takes the idea of pilot injection - squirting a small amount of fuel into the cylinder to `prime' the combustion chamber for the main ignition process - and refines it still further. In this instance, the main injection is divided into a series of smaller injections, allowing smoother, more gradual combustion that utilises fuel more efficiently. The electronic control units therefore have to be astonishingly precise. Whereas before the time lag between injections was a relatively yawning 1,500 microseconds, the response time has been slashed by a factor of 10. A variable geometry turbocharger and a high pressure direct injection system make the 150bhp or 170bhp outputs possible but the key is the 305Nm torque figure. This means that this diesel model feels gutsier than the old 3.2-litre V6 petrol GT flagship. You'll believe that too when you drive the car. Fire it up and the engine settles into an unobtrusive background thrum that never threatens to rattle the expensively moulded dashboard. Yes, you can tell it sups from the black pump, but it's hardly what you'd describe as coarse. On the move, the engine remains pleasantly muted without the whistles and bellows of many powerful turbodiesel cars. Between 1,750 and 3,250rpm, there's a huge shove in the back, the elastic power delivery catapulting the Alfa down the road in a deliciously addictive manner. Even in sixth gear, even the 150bhp GT JTDm will dispatch the 50-75mph increment in just 7.9 seconds. From rest, it'll accelerate to 60mph in 9.6 seconds and run onto a top speed of 130mph. Average fuel economy is pegged at 45.6mpg and emissions amount to a mere 165g/km. Closer inspection of the GT chassis reveals that it's something of a mix and match between the old 156 saloon and the 147 hatch. The tape measure shows that the car rides on the 2,596mm long 156 wheelbase but underneath the pretty styling, the firewall, the pedal box, the steering column and the entire climate control system are pure 147. The front wings are shared with the 147 GTA although the bonnet has been slightly modified. The styling house Bertone were responsible for most of the design and the GT was originally pencilled in to be assembled at their Turin plant where spare capacity had been freed up by the demise of the Fiat Punto Cabriolet. After many beans were counted, however, Alfa Romeo thanked Bertone very much for their penmanship and decided to build the GT alongside the 147 at their Pomigliano d'Arco plant just outside Naples. Given the solid feel of latest generation 147s, that's perhaps no bad thing and the first impression one gets dropping into the driver's seat of the GT is of rugged build quality. The cowled instruments and sporting logos that can look a little overblown on a base 147 hatch suddenly make all sorts of sense in a `proper' coupe. The script on the dials has been revised for the GT, the centre console has been redesigned and the material used for the dashboard is of a different texture to standard 147. Many will be sold on the GT long before their slacks hit the seats. Much of that will be due to the swoopy styling. Much of it is contemporary Alfa Romeo, particularly around the front end where few will be able to distinguish GT from 147 as it arrives in their rear view mirror. Some cars enjoy massive yet wholly undeserved success. For each of these there's the opposite, a model that's been somewhat neglected despite offering a well-stuffed portfolio of talent. The Alfa GT JTDm is just that car. Quick, relaxed and with the air of a car far more expensive, this is a model that buyers will be falling over themselves for in twenty years time. Today, however, you're unlikely to have to shoulder too many people aside at your Alfa dealer. I however never really saw the appeal of Fiat badge engineered Alfa's, finding the whole image here, all that glorious pedigree nonsense, a little puzzling. Our company has owned dozens of them (literally) over the years, as part of what is referred to as a "user chooser" fleet - i.e. the drivers choose their own cars up to a given budget. This may be viewed by some as a useful incentive when it comes to employing a certain calibre of staff, as far as the company is concerned it has been a very expensive policy. Quite simply, some cars cost far more to run than others. For example an executive size BMW saloon is going to cost you or your business a whole heap less to run than an Alfa Romeo of the same size and initial price. However I do like to consider myself as objective as possible when it comes to test driving and then purchasing a car, I know what I like and sometimes some surprising brands actually provide it. Very often it is when you have pre-conceived ideas of what a product will be like that it serves up the biggest surprise. Rewind to the summer of last year, anyone who has read my recent car reviews will know that my wife and I are lucky enough to get to attend an event called Company Car in Action at the Millbrook Testing Ground in Bedfordshire each year. If like me you are a car enthusiast, this place is like a kid's playground, nearly all manufacturers are after the fleet (company car) business and this is the place they showcase their latest products each year. It is a little like a motor show, except here, in the complete safety of a closed, test track, environment you get to drive as many cars as you choose to in the day. In practical terms this usually amounts to between 12 and 14 different cars, all driven back to back on the same routes on the same day. The facilities offered at this establishment are superb. In an 8 mile test drive here, you have covered different road conditions, surfaces, corners and hills that in ordinary daily driving you would need 1000's of miles behind the wheel to experience. Some of the course is pretty extreme too, the hill route throws at you hairpins and 1 in 4 hills that you would need to travel to Scotland, the Lakes or Wales to find. Here at Millbrook you very quickly are able to come to a valid conclusion as to liking a car or not, the whole experience every year splits the cars into two sharp groups, those that are any good and those that are not. Driving here there are remarkably few cars on sale that fall into a middle ground, maybe the only exceptions being the people carriers which are totally unsuited to the hill route, but that is another issue I'm going to keep you guessing just a little longer as to which camp the brand new Alfa Romeo GT 1.9 JTD falls into. By the time we got around to visiting the Alfa Romeo stand we had already driven a truly amazingly diverse range of cars, from a 6.0 litre W12 Volkswagen Phaeton right through to a 1.3 litre Fiat Panda, all of which you can read about elsewhere. Firstly, what exactly is an Alfa Romeo GT 1.9 JTD 1.9? Well like all other Alfas it is a badge engineered Fiat. It does not look like any current Fiat model for sure but behind anything that is visual or styled this car is pure Fiat to the core. Is that a bad thing? Probably not entirely no, but then the Stilo on which this car is heavily based does not exactly set the world on fire in its own market sector. The last Alfa I drove here was a 147, as already mentioned I have never been a fan of the marque, although many of them have passed through the company fleet, indeed an Alfa Spider is still languishing there. At that time we still had a GTV Coupe on the fleet - this cars' predecessor, I came to Millbrook and tried a five cylinder Fiat Coupe, unsurprisingly the Fiat proved to be a far more agreeable drive. This was the first new Alfa GT to be seen in the metal, gunmetal in colour, the styling is certainly unique. The stretched coupe body looks decidedly odd, especially the extra long doors. As you open the very heavy frameless door the window glass drops an inch to clear the rubber seal, neatly depositing a substantial amount of rainwater just where you are about to sit. Inside is a very typical Alfa interior, dark and cheap looking, especially the dashboard which is cutaway in front of the passenger giving this the feel of a small supermini rather than that of a mid-range saloon based car. In front of the driver sits the twin deeply coweled instruments, something of an Alfa trademark. Our car was a basic specification model, adding to the low rent feel and appearance were the coarse black cloth covered seats, I imagine that 1200 spent on tan leather could work wonders in here. Interestingly from launch the Alfa comes with a choice of three engines, two of which, a 1.9 litre and a 2.4 litre are four and five cylinder diesels. The sole (current) petrol model is the evergreen 2.0 Twinspark unit, badged as the JTS. Being a fleet day, Alfa had only actually brought along a brace of 1.9 JTD's to try. Strangely the fine engine was actually the highlight of this car, more than doing the GT image justice. Somehow Alfa's engineers have succeeded in tuning the engine and exhaust system to sound much more like a traditional petrol powered Alfa Twin Cam unit than a diesel. It had, unlike any other Alfa I have driven, a good spread of low down torque too, better in this respect I think than the 2.2 litre diesel unit in our own Honda. Due to the restricted glass area, rain and fairly poor windscreen wipers, this was an intimidating car to drive around the car park. Sitting on a wet seat does not put you in the best frame of mind either. If you are an ex-army tank driver you would probably feel quite at home in one of these, for the rest of us mere mortals driving one will equate to being a slave to fashion. Small windows lead to a cramped, dark feeling interior, but worse huge blind spots make this a nightmare car to drive around town in. Things improved a little on the hill route where you really only need to see forward. Unfortunately there were no surprises in terms of ride and handling, this course never did suit Alfa's, the GT crashing and banging over the surface imperfections just like others driven in previous years. There was not anything actually wrong with the ride or handling, merely the amount of noise coming back into the interior through the suspension. It had by far the heaviest steering of the day too, a feature that you would get used to but find tiring around the town. The brakes, which in nearly all of the other cars failed to raise mention, on the day they just worked, were also a negative point in the Alfa. Yes they stopped the car, and slowed you from speed too, but like the steering were heavy and "dead" in feel, not inspiring a lot of confidence when you needed it. At 100 mph, a speed which it attained with consummate ease, the wind noise was intolerable. That and a cacophony of rattles and bangs from the suspension and various interior fittings, would rule it out as any form of practical long distance transport. There are doubtless many who will buy it purely on style alone, some for the badge, but for the rest of us who require a refined long distance company car; this simply would not be considered an option. You may remember from my previous reviews, we approach any car driven from the same rather specific perspective. That being, would we (my wife and I) choose to cover the 2,500 mile round trip to her parent's home in south eastern Poland and back. This may indeed sound like an extreme test to many, but for us it is a way of life, twice a year - summer and Christmas - we complete this journey. We are not alone; we have met others of "international marriage" on our route bound for the Ukraine and Czech Republic, all of whom also travel at least twice a year. Remarkably, up to our purchasing a Honda last year, the thing that all of us had in common was that we were driving Vauxhalls! Of course others use lots of different cars to travel across Europe in, in Poland Alfa Romeo is a very common brand of car and yet never have I seen an English registered one out there, that I think may explain my conclusion! Drive to Poland in an Alfa GT? I'm sorry but I think on THEIR motorway surfaces it would not arrive in one piece, the passenger and driver certainly wouldn't! END NOTE: If you, like me, like the 'sound' (sorry for the awful pun!) of the engine here - but not the car - you're in luck! I forgot to put in my review above that the very same 150bhp 1.9 litre (Fiat designed and built) engine is available in a veriety of other cars - some with surprising badges. Most of the current Vauxhall range offer it, including Signum, Vectra and now the new Astra. If you can't stand the idea of a Vectra, and frankly who'd blame you, then the very same engine (and six speed gear box) can also be had in the Saab 9-3. ... less RICHADA 07.05.2005 (08.05.2005) Ciao members have rated this car review on average: very helpful Review of Alfa Romeo GT 1.9 JTDm 16v Reliability Safety Spaciousness Comfort Road Handling Customer service Security Looks Features Fuel consumption Sporty AND Practical.... Advantages: Looks great, great handling, loads of room inside, lots of fun to drive. Disadvantages: A rear babyseat will leave the front passenger little leg room. Having bought one of these on a 06 plate I have now had it for nearly a year. I can say without any shadow of any doubt that this is the best car I have ever owned, and will be replacing it with a newer version when the time comes to change it. For a coupe it is surprisingly spacious, I have had plenty of passengers sat comfortably in the back even thought they are over 6 feet tall. Also the very large boot and drop down rear seats make the car ... ...one of the important things to check was whether I could fit a pram and all of the other necessary day to day bits and pieces comfortably in the boot. The answer is yes, quite easily. The only drawback is the new laws governing baby seats mean that the seat needs to be placed in the back of the car, meaning the passenger is pushed quite far forward. Now down to the actual driving experience. Advantages: Looks great, fun to drive, economical, still feels and sounds sporty Disadvantages: Short power band, no power in low revs, The Alfa GT has a range of fantastic engines, with the 1.9 JTD being the base model, but that doesn't mean it should be overlooked. It provides the most economical figures and when not driven hard will make the most of your last few drops of diesel. When you want to have fun on tight and twisty roads, the 1.9 JTD provides a short but surging boost of power, which often provokes the traction control light to flash desperately on the dash. The gearbox ... ...changing gears when pushing the Alfa hard - but in a way this makes the back-road drive a more engaging experience. The front seats are inviting and provide a racing feeling but the rear headroom is none existent so choose your passengers carefully! The fuel economy is fantastic, we can get nearly 50mpg on a good run which more than double my other car. It looks great and always turns heads. A diesel Alfa is always going to be a tricky concept to pull off. Like introducing ketchup to your Sunday roast, one might be desirable, the other delectable, but that gives no guarantee that a confection of the two will work. Happily and as we have already reported, with its new Giulietta Alfa Romeo appears to have tracked down and recovered sizeable chunks of a mojo that had been missing for so long many, ourselves included, feared it dead. And the good news is that for once not even compression ignition can spoil the fun. What's it like? I’m not going to say its 2.0-litre, 168bhp turbo-diesel motor actually adds to your enjoyment, because the standard it must meet is set by it’s no less powerful 1.4-litre turbo-petrol brother which is sweeter, sharper and quieter by far. But nor does it detract from the driving experience sufficiently for its only justification to be circumstance rather than choice. Partly this is because the rest of the car is so unexpectedly good. Diesel power puts a further 30kg just where you don’t need them over the front wheels, but this remains a suitably engaging Alfa to run up an Italian mountain or, I have no doubt, down a British B-road. Its ride quality is just as startlingly impressive, its steering as lucid as any all-electric, system charged with turning driven wheels as you’ll find. You can convince yourself its turn-in is a little less incisive, but this is a matter of degrees. Compared to a 147, it remains miraculous. Yet even a diesel engine as effective as this one would still seem a little out of place in any Alfa Romeo, and in one as otherwise sophisticated as the Giulietta, the inherent limitations of Rudolf Diesel’s invention are perhaps all too clear to see. Principally, the motor is too noisy, both under load and at a gentle cruise. It’s not a deal-breaker but if you are wedded to the idea of the diesel, can we recommend not test-driving the 1.4tb just to confirm your decision? Otherwise you might just find the diesel’s ability to travel 12 extra miles for every gallon while emitting 10 fewer grammes of CO2 for every kilometre poor recompense for Alfa’s best four-cylinder motor since another Rudolf, this one called Hruska, penned a magical little flat-four and installed it in the Alfasud nearly 40 years ago. Like all good diesels, this one can deliver peak torque soon after idle and exercise steely control on the gradient of the curve all the way to peak power, making the gearbox’s six evenly stacked ratios a marketing rather than an engineering imperative. But there is no joy in this motor and if I can briefly compare it to the best of the best, BMW has not only found out how to liberate much more power from the same capacity, it has done so with considerably better manners too. Should I buy one? In summary, it’s fair to say the diesel Giulietta (at least this diesel Giulietta, for there is a 103bhp 1.6-litre version yet to be driven) comes close to greatness despite rather than because of this engine. It is ketchup, when what you really want with something as tasty as this is mustard.
