Expert Rating: In Fitting The Monster 3.2-Litre V6 Engine To The Compact And Elegant GT Coupe, Alfa Romeo Have Created An Utterly Beguiling Proposition. Andy Enright ReportsDesigning cars should be easy. Stick the biggest engine in your range in the smallest, sleekest coupe body and then just sit back and watch the queues build outside your dealerships. Much as wed like to point out an obvious caveat in this plan, its exactly what Alfa Romeo have done in bringing the GT 3.2-litre V6 to market and they appear to have pulled it off. Those who know a little more about vehicle dynamics will point to the fact that the ride and handling of the 147GTA and the 156 GTA which also share the 3.2-litre V6 are turbulent to say the least, especially over the sort of typical bumpy B-roads on which most enthusiasts choose to get their motoring jollies these days. The problems of weight distribution and traction rear their ugly heads when you sling a heavy engine up front and expect it to deploy power cleanly. Throw a corner into the equation and things get more complicated still. Despite this formidable list of potential snagging points, Alfas chassis engineers have succeeded with the GT 3.2 where they have had mixed results with the sportier GTA cars. Its very quick. You probably dont need me to tell you that, but its worth reiterating. The figures claim that it will notch off the sprint to 60mph in just 6.7 seconds but subjectively it feels half a second quicker again and it will have no problem breaking the 150mph barrier. The engine is a very mildly detuned version of that which powers the 147GTA, but it nevertheless churns out a hale and hearty 240bhp. Try tagging onto this Alfas tail in something like a Mazda RX8 and youll be treated to a receding view of is pert rump. "Take a walk around the Alfa Romeo GT 3.2 V6 and its impossible to find an awkward angle or dodgy detail"Alfas Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) system in conjunction with the ASR traction control program has to work overtime to ensure those 17-inch Michelin Pilots arent turned to vapour with every overenthusiastic stamp on the loud pedal and whooping roll of the wrists. Unlike many such systems which slap you firmly on the wrists each time you even think of the word fun, VDC allows a welcome amount of leeway before it subtly intervenes. Theres even a Motor Slip Regulation (MSR) system which restores torque to the engine if you downshift too quickly. This prevents the front wheels locking up and youll value it on a wet unfamiliar road if you botch a shift. Not that this scenario is too likely given the communicative nature of that beautiful engine and the glossy smoothness of the rather long-legged gearchange. The Alfa feels rangy and loose limbed along a smooth A-road and its only when its really extended around a series of bumpy bends with blind crests and treacherous cambers that the chassis can really shine. No other Alfa of recent years would even get near the GT on a road like this and not very many cars with four seats and a £26,400 price tag would be able to hold a candle to its all-round dynamic excellence. When you consider that this would just about land you a 168bhp worth of BMW 320Ci Sport coupe, youll appreciate the Alfas stonking performance per pound factor. Whats more, no affordable BMW, Mercedes or even Audi looks anything like as good as the Alfa GT coupe. Take a walk around it and its impossible to find an awkward angle or dodgy detail. It really has no business looking as good as it does, as closer inspection will reveal that its something of a mix and match between 156 saloon and 147 hatch. The tape measure shows that the car rides on the 2596mm long 156 wheelbase but underneath the pretty styling, the firewall, the pedal box, the steering column and the entire climate control system are pure 147. The front wings are shared with the 147 GTA although the bonnet has been slightly modified. The styling house Bertone were responsible for most of the design and the GT was originally pencilled in to be assembled at their Turin plant where spare capacity had been freed up by the demise of the Fiat Punto Cabriolet. After many beans were counted, however, Alfa Romeo thanked Bertone very much for their penmanship and decided to build the GT alongside the 147 at their Pomigliano dArco plant just outside Naples. Given the solid feel of latest generation 147s, thats perhaps no bad thing and the first impression one gets dropping into the drivers seat of the GT is of rugged build quality. The cowled instruments and sporting logos that can look a little overblown on a base 147 hatch suddenly make all sorts of sense in a proper coupe. The script on the dials has been revised for the GT, the centre console has been redesigned and the material used for the dashboard is of a different texture to standard 147. Many will be sold on the GT long before their slacks hit the seats. Much of that will be due to the swoopy styling. Much of it is contemporary Alfa Romeo, particularly around the front end where few will be able to distinguish GT form 147 as it arrives in their rear view mirror. As the GT slides by, however, a high-waisted scalloped flank is evident with a stub tail thats almost reminiscent of an early eighties Giulietta. Unlike the Giulietta, however, that boot is in fact a bit of automotive trompe loeil, opening to reveal a gaping hatchback. Theres 320 litres of room back there, which is a good deal more than a 147 hatch can muster with its rear seats in place and almost as much as the 156 saloon. Although designing cars may seem easy, turning them into desirable finished products is anything but. We expected the Alfa Romeo GT 3.2 V6 to be fun but flawed. Instead its just fun. Alfas chassis gurus deserve serious respect.FACTS AT A GLANCE CAR: Alfa Romeo GT 3.2 V6 PRICES: £26,400 on the road INSURANCE GROUP: 19 CO2 EMISSIONS: 295g/km PERFORMANCE: 0-60mph 6.7s Max Speed 151 mph FUEL CONSUMPTION: (urban) 15.2mpg / (extra urban) 32.5mpg / (combined) 22.8mpg STANDARD SAFETY FEATURES: Twin front and side airbags / ABS WILL IT FIT IN YOUR GARAGE?: Length/Width/Height, 4489/1763/1365mm Build Comfort Depreciation Economy Equipment Handling Insurance Performance Styling Value Thursday April 19 Send by Messenger Email this article Print ADVERTISEMENT if(window.yzq_d==null)window.yzq_d=new Object();

375 lb (170 kg) Alfa Romeo SOHC V6[4] 2.0L V6 12V Turbo from Alfa Romeo 166. Alfa Romeo's in-house V6 engine design made its initial début in 1979 in the Alfa 6. Introduced in 2.5 L guise, production engines would eventually range from 2.0 L to 3.2 L displacement. With modifications it is possible to increase engine displacement to 3.8 L (~232 cu in). Initially developed in the early 1970s by Giuseppe Busso, the original SOHC 12-valve design employed short push-rods to operate the exhaust valves in a design similar to that of earlier BMW / Bristol engines. In 1993, the first DOHC version of this engine appeared powering the Alfa Romeo 164.
The Alfa Romeo V6 has been also quite popular in "kit car" type vehicles like the Ultima GTR,[5] Hawk HF Series[6] and DAX.[7] and is also used in the Gillet Vertigo sports car.[8] Contents 1 2.0

6 Notes [edit] 2.0
A 2.0 L (1,997 cc (121.9 cu in)) version was introduced in 1983. Both carburettor 132 PS (97 kW; 130 hp) and fuel injected versions were available from the start. A 2.0 turbocharged version, derived from the 3.0 L 12v, was introduced in 1991 in the Alfa Romeo 164 with 210 PS (154 kW; 207 hp).
Applications: 1983–1986 Alfa Romeo Alfa 6
1984–1987 Alfa Romeo 90
1991–1997 Alfa Romeo 164 (2.0 L turbo)
1995–2001 Alfa Romeo GTV & Spider (2.0 L turbo)
1998–2002 Alfa Romeo 166 (2.0 L turbo) [edit] 2.5 The 2.5L as longitudinal installation in GTV6. The original engine displaced 2.5 L (2,492 cc (152.1 cu in)) and produced 158 PS (116 kW; 156 hp). It was a 2-valve per cylinder design with a single belt-driven camshaft per cylinder bank and six carburettors fitted.
Fuel injection was added for the 1983 Alfa 6, which produced the same 158 PS (116 kW; 156 hp). The 2-valve engine ended its life in the Alfa 155, where there were two series for this engine, the 2.5 L developing 166 PS (122 kW; 164 hp). Differences between them were small and only on torque and power delivery producing exactly the same horsepower.

1987–1989 Rayton Fissore Magnum V6[9] [edit] Four-valve 2.5L V6 24V from Alfa Romeo 156. A four-valve version was introduced in 1997 with the Alfa Romeo 156. The engine now produced 190 PS (140 kW; 187 hp). In 2001, the V6 was uprated to 192 PS (141 kW; 189 hp). The 166 used a slightly detuned version to make more low rev torque. This engine version was awarded as the International Engine of the Year in 2000. The engine has a 88 mm (3.5 in) bore and a 68.3 mm (2.69 in) stroke.[10]
Applications: 1997–2005 Alfa Romeo 156
1998–2007 Alfa Romeo 166 [edit] 3.0
The 2.5 L engine was bored and stroked out to 3.0 L (2,959 cc (180.6 cu in)) for the 1987 75/Milano Verde, where it produced 185 PS (136 kW; 182 hp), still with 2 valves per cylinder. This engine was modified for transverse placement in the 164 and fitted with a high-performance camshaft and low-restriction exhaust, producing 192 PS (141 kW; 189 hp) in standard form, 184 PS (135 kW; 181 hp) when a catalyzer was fitted in 1991, with the Cloverleaf version producing 200 PS (147 kW; 197 hp). The same engine fitted to the SZ was tuned to a further 210 PS (154 kW; 207 hp).

The engine was upgraded to dual overhead cams and four valves per cylinder in 1993. Due to this and other refinements, this engine produced 211 PS (155 kW; 208 hp) for the regular 1993 164, with 230 PS (169 kW; 227 hp) and 276 N·m (204 ft·lbf) in the 164 QV with the Euro 3 engine producing 232 PS (171 kW; 229 hp) on the Q4 model which in its final production run in 1996, it got reduced to 228 PS (168 kW; 225 hp) but with increased torque. The final run of 3.0 V6 engines fitted to the GTV and 166 range, produced 220 PS (162 kW; 217 hp).

2001–2006 Lancia Thesis [edit] Production end
The V6 production ended in 2005 at Alfa Romeo Arese Plant;[12] a stock of five thousand was built, to be used Lancia Thesis, Alfa 166 and Alfa GT models.[13] The engine was replaced in the 159 and Brera by a new 3.2 L V6 unit combining a General Motors-designed engine block with Alfa Romeo cylinder heads and induction. British automotive engineering company Cosworth was keen to buy assembly lines of the Alfa Romeo V6 engine, but the Italian company did not want to sell it.[14] The last version of 3.2 L engine was Euro4 compliant, so it would have been possible to produce it a couple of years more.[15] The engine designer Giuseppe Busso died only a couple of days after the last engine was produced in Arese.

Auto Express Car Reviews By Mat WatsonJuly 2004 Rating: There can be no denying that the Alfa Romeo GT is a beautiful-looking machine. With its sleek coupe body and wide, purposeful stance, it is arguably one of the most stylish motors on the road. It's a capable driver's car too -a fact that was confirmed to us when we sampled the 1.9 JTD and 2.0 JTS variants. But while the diesel version is punchy and economical, and the 2.0-litre petrol is responsive and free revving, neither engine really gives the sporty-looking GT the power it so obviously could handle. Now a potent V6 has been added to the line-up for buyers who want the full Alfa experience. It's the same 3.2-litre unit that is found in the 156 GTA, but has been tuned to offer more low-down torque and 240bhp. Alfa Romeo's V6 engines are legendary, and this motor is no exception. The moment you turn the key, it is obvious that the unit has bags of character. At idle there is a satisfying burble from the exhaust, which develops into an intoxicating Luciano Pavarotti-style tenor roar as the revs rise.The engine pulls cleanly from low speeds, and the power builds steadily until 4,000rpm. At this point, the full benefit of the 24 valves comes into play, and the tacho needle races to the red line with even greater urgency. Accelerating through the ratios, the Alfa GT 3.2-litre GT V6 can sprint from 0-60mph in 6.7 seconds and on to a top speed of 150mph-plus. It's just a shame that the sloppy six-speed box isn't in keeping with the sporty engine. However, with 289Nm of torque on tap, you don't really need to use it much anyway - simply select a gear and let the silky engine do the rest. Normally, with all that power going through the front wheels, you would expect a tug of war with the steering wheel. Thankfully, the V6 model's 156 GTA-derived sports suspension does a decent job of keeping torque steer to a minimum. Although you can spin an inside wheel through corners, the Alfa feels stable in a straight line. Overall, the car's handling is impressive, although it's not as polished as that of a BMW 3-Series Coupe. There is little body roll through corners, and the steering is sharp, if lacking in feel. There is a downside to this sporty set-up, however, as on poorly surfaced roads the ride can get a little harsh. The Alfa GT 3.2 V6 costs ΂£26,695, and comes with a leather interior as standard. This plus discreet badging, stylish 17-inch multi-spoke alloys and twin chrome exhausts are the only features which distinguish it from lesser models. But with a potent V6 under the bonnet, the GT now has the performance to match its seductive looks. The unit itself is full of character, and even though its 240bhp is fed through the front wheels, torque steer is kept to a minimum by the 156 GTA-derived sports suspension. This also helps improve handling over the standard model - but the trade-off is that the ride suffers on poor roads.
