| Alfa Romeo 164 3.0 Super Auto | Fast becoming rare and very collectable only 4 of this model left in the UK (howmany left.com). This may well be the ...> best with only 30000 documented miles. The car is used by myself and the two previous owners as a weekend toy. First owned by Ronald Davies, the boss of Malvern sports cars in Worcester, hence the number plate (valued at £800) which will stay on the car. | Engine | Delivers 200+ bhp in a smooth and unruffled fashion. Gives a top speed of 146mph and gets past 60mph in less than 9 seconds, which is great if you fancy a track day. The beauty of this engine is how it delivers power from low revs. I’m no fan of Clarkson but he reckons "It’s the most responsive engine outside of a Ferrari money can buy". | Gearbox | Changes smooth and without fault and has 3 electronic programmes. | Auto Mode- 4 speed for normal everyday use. | Sport Mode-This holds first second and third gear a little longer allowing higher revs and rapid acceleration. | Ice Mode-Which changes gear as soon as any wheelspin is detected. | Exterior | Styled by Pininfarini, in fact the 164 was the very first car that Pininfarini designed both the exterior and the interior. The car is always kept polished and the Alfa red, the only colour for an Alfa in my opinion, looks fantastic. Due to Alfa`s double zinc coated body panels there is no rust what so ever, the only blemishes to the paintwork are a couple of stone chips on the bonnet which are only noticeable on close inspection. | A set of teardrop alloys in perfect condition shod with a pair of Goodyear rears and Avons on the front, both are Z rated with plenty of miles left. The spare is a matching alloy. | Interior | The cabin of 164 is comfortable, spacious and very well appointed, bare in mind the list price back in 1997 was over £27000. | The upholstery is a luxurious grey velour and is in unmarked condition, the car has never been smoked in. | Electronically operated and heated front seats | 4x Electric Windows | Electric tilt and slide sunroof | Electrically operated and retractable heated door mirrors | Rear view mirror with auto dipping function | Access/exit courtesy lights | Front footlights | 2x Rear reading lights | Map reading light front | Ski tunnel | Front fog lights | ABS | PAS | Factory alarm and imobliser | Remote central locking | Wooden Steering wheel | Rear sun blinds | Boot open | Filler cap open | Audio | Top quality Clarion/Alfa system am/fm cassette and 6 disc multichanger | Integrated Arial | History | Complete and comprehensive. | Every piece of paper relevant to the car from day one, all receipts and every MOT. I have the Alfa binder containing the owner’s manual plus the later added supplement, the service record, the aftercare book, a 1997 price list and sales brochure. Also there`s a clarion user’s manual. The car comes with 3 sets of keys including the all-important brown key which holds all the cars data. | Recent Maintenance | Cambelt changed 25200 miles | New water pump 29600 miles | Full set plugs 30810 miles | New radiator 31400 miles | All new discs and pads 32270 miles | Since I have owned the car it has been looked after and serviced by the excellent Alfa Tech of Huddersfield who are Alfa trained independent and highly recommended. | Overview | The car is in near perfect condition, everything works exactly as it should, it has been cherished throughout its life. A quick look in the service record will show that (8 oil and filter changes in 33000 miles). It`s a joy to drive, sure footed, quick, quite, comfortable and the exhaust note when you engage sport mode and put your foot down is fantastic. Some people will be put off by the front wheel drive but I know through experience (M535) that getting 200+bhp down through the rear wheels can be difficult and sometimes dangerous. | The running costs are surprisingly low, my Volvo estate uses more fuel and I have a classic policy that costs £210 per year fully comp with Footman James Insurance. | As for the asking price, I have an independent insurance valuation and will not part with the car for a penny less that. It`s on a 10 day auction with no buy it now price, however I will listen to serious offers. A £200 non-returnable deposit through Paypal will be required. I`m happy to answer any questions on 07846 627081. | Dean | X

The 164 was re-badged as the 168 for the Hong Kong and Malaysian markets, as the number "164" had a very negative connotation (In Chinese it is a homophone to "一路æ»" — all the way to death), and "168" has quite the opposite ("一路發" — all the way to prosperity). It was the last model to be developed while the marque was still independent (although it was launched a few months after the purchase of the company by Fiat ), and was most notably the first large front-wheel drive Alfa. The 164 was essential to Fiat's plan to relaunch Alfa Romeo as a prestige car brand after the late 1970s and early 1980s. The 164 was the last Alfa saloon to be sold in the North American market, where only the 3.0 L V6 was offered (12-valve from 1991 to 1993, 24-valve from 1994 to 1995). It was quite successful in Europe, attracting keen drivers who wanted an affordable and reliable sports saloon as an alternative to the German offerings of BMW and Mercedes-Benz . The 164 was discontinued and replaced by the Alfa Romeo 166 in 1998. 273,857 had been produced. [ 2 ] [ edit ] Design The Alfa Romeo 164 was styled by Pininfarina in 1987, shortly after completing the Ferrari Testarossa . The 164 can be seen to share several styling design ideas with the Ferrari expressed as a four-door saloon. In concern for heritage, the design is also the logical extension and successor of the Alfetta , particularly the late-model "long nose, square light". The 164 was the first Alfa to feature extensive use of computer aided design for calculating structural stresses, resulting in a very rigid but still relatively lightweight body. The 164 was the basis of the Type Four chassis , which it shares with Lancia Thema , Fiat Croma and Saab 9000 . Being the last to reach the market, the 164's bodyshell was the most aerodynamic of the four, and had a markedly sleeker profile and lower coefficient of drag. In order to permit this design variation, an exclusive front suspension was developed. The 164 was the first of the "new technology" Alfa Romeos, and is the technological and styling basis of all Alfas to the present day. The 164 also introduced dramatically improved build quality over previous Alfas, featuring galvanised steel frame and various body panels for the first time, ending the most common complaint by Alfa customers about rust problems encountered in older models such as the Alfasud and the GTV. Even though some purists feared of loss of character due to the adoption of front-wheel drive for the first time in an Alfa top-line saloon, the car proved itself as a supremely comfortable and sure-footed car, with a distinctively sporting character, inline with the marque's tradition. In fact, the motorpress of the day found its only fault to be some torque steer , particularly in earlier versions. Equipped with the most complex wiring loom of any Alfa Romeo, the 164 was designed to compete in the executive car segment dominated by the German cars. [ 3 ] It offered better value for money in terms of technology (having three onboard computers, one for air conditioning , one for instrumentation, and one for engine management; air conditioning and instrument functions shared a multiple-mode coded Z-80 -class microcontroller for dashboard functioning). Air-direction within the ventilation system was controlled by a pair of servomechanisms , which were constructed using notoriously fragile plastic gears and were prone to failure; possible high part costs are alleviated by the commonality of these parts with the 166 . At least one aftermarket company has also developed metal replacement gears which eliminates the breakage issue. Also, the car had some very advanced features for its day, such as automatic climate control and electronically controlled damping suspension (in the top-line Cloverleaf models and 164S). This suspension actively reduced damping in response to conditions to provide a dynamic compromise between road holding and comfort. The 164 also boasted engines rated among the best in the industry at the time, and the same basic engine designs were used until very recently by Alfa Romeo across its model range. [ edit ] Alfa Romeo 164 Q4 Alfa Romeo 164 QV 1990-92 In 1993 Alfa introduced a four wheel drive variant called the Q4 (short for Quadrifoglio 4), which was equipped with an even more powerful version of the 3.0L V6 engine. The Q4 four-wheel-drive system (Viscomatic) was co-developed with the Austrian company Steyr-Puch . [ 4 ] The system was very advanced when compared to other 4WD systems at that time. The system consisted of a viscous coupling unit, central epicyclic differential and Torsen differential in the rear. The whole system is connected to ABS and Motronic units. The power driven to the rear axle is continuously variable from 0 to 100%, so the car can be fully front- or rear-wheel-drive as conditions require. Torque is distributed between axles depending on the speed, turning radius, engine rpms, throttle position and ABS parametrics. This model was equipped with a Getrag 6-speed manual gearbox. [ edit ] Development Alfa Romeo 164 Super 3.0 V6 Alfa Romeo 164 Super 3.0 V6 The 164's development was by far and away the most demanding of any car manufactured by Alfa Romeo, and set the standard by which other European manufacturers would be measured. Initial testing of the 164's dynamic elements began in 1984, where Giuliettas where used as test mules for engines and drivetrain. Initial handling bugs were ironed out on the factory's test track in Arese . In 1985, the first pre-production 164's were put through their paces on the road. Heavily disguised, with many false panels and even a false nose design (borrowing heavily from the then equally undeveloped 155), sporting 4 round headlamps, these vehicle mules served to test the 164 for the gruelling 1 million kilometre static and road testing demanded of the design. In 1986 and 1987, the first 150 164's were given their pre-production testing. In terms of engineering demands, these exceeded every Alfa before, and by quite a substantial margin. In Morocco, desert testing saw 5 grey 164 Twinsparks and V6's undergo the equivalent of the Paris-Dakar rally . Road conditions varied from good tarmac to off-road conditions, and accelerometers confirmed the superiority of the 164 in terms of passenger comfort. This data was cross-confirmed in the engineering laboratory with a sophisticated dummy in the driver's seat, with accelerometers both in its seat, and in its ears to mimic that of the semi-circular canals of the ear. The Twinspark and the V6 underwent handling trials at Arese. The Twinspark displayed very mature driving manners at the limit, with minimal skid. The V6 displayed a 25% increase in at-the-limit skid, a natural consequence of its greater nose weight. ABS testing confirmed that the Twinspark has superior braking to the V6. Brake linings of the 164's were run at maximum braking until they literally glowed with heat, and displayed no deviation in form. The 164 was the first Alfa to feature slotted double-walled disc brakes. At no point were the discs drilled to release excess heat, the original design being demonstrated to be excellent. Acceleration testing confirmed the V6 was the superior performer in terms of speed. In line with Alfa Romeo's remarkable ability to get all cars to achieve their speedometer maximum point, 164's were tested to their design maximum — 240 km/h (150 mph). All achieved them, though the Twinspark displays reluctance to exceed 205 km/h (127 mph), and achieved 240 very slowly. The V6 achieved it easily, and maintained it, thus demonstrating Alfa's legendary performance. Sound production was tested in an anechoic chamber, the car being subjected to stress and road noise testing, with instruments and with live subjects at the wheel, on a specially designed rig. Electromagnetic stability of the complex electronic system was also tested, in an anechoic chamber equipped with EM emitters (radar). The 164 engines were run to destruction, the Twinspark proving to be the most robust, and with the longest possible engine life. The V6 displayed only 10% shorter overall engine life. [ edit ] Styling Pininfarina 's last design effort prior to the 164 was the Ferrari Testarossa. The design ideas present in the Testarossa were developed in the 164 within the brief of a four-door saloon. Examples of this include the wedge-profile which is reminiscent of the Testarossa, and the three grooved cheat lines running down the side of the 164's false door-panels and bumpers recall the air intake strakes, and the processed lip of these panels also recall the stylistic separation of elements of the Ferrari. The wedged notch running down the length of the vehicle is a unique and striking design feature, which helped earn the 164 a unique place in automotive styling annals. It is often described as the most important and greatest example of styling for the year of its introduction, 1987. Alfa Romeo 164 Super (1993) The 164 has also been described as a more significant, though no less important departure for Alfa as the well known 'Monstro', the Alfa Romeo SZ of 1988. Styled by Pininfarina , the 164's exterior bore a more than a passing resemblance to the Peugeot 605 , launched a year later, and also styled by Pininfarina . This is particularly apparent in the wedge-shaped body and in the longitudinal groove along the side of both cars. However, individual stylistic treatment given by features such as the integration of the traditional Alfa triangular grille , elongated in the hood, and the full-width rear light cluster distinguished the 164 from its French counterpart. The 164's styling cues have been carried over to contemporary late-series 33s , and to the 155, and the aerodynamic wedge shape introduced in the 164 remains a visible design feature in all subsequent Alfa Romeos into the present day. [ edit ] Engines The base 164 engine was the 2.0 L Twin Spark I4 engine with two spark plugs per cylinder. Apart from that, this engine was also notable for having a two-stage valve timing system (before Honda 's famous VTEC ), and an induction valve blade-type system, aimed at improving low-end torque. The block of the Twin Spark was the same 2.0 L that had been a part of Alfa's road and race car history since the 1930s. This was intended to give buyers a strong sense of heritage, as well as a significant advantage in terms of reliability. New to the engine was the introduction of fuel injection , controlled by a Bosch Motronic system. A very sophisticated engine, with a traditional Alfa chain-driven DOHC cylinder head, a single cooling fan and generator belt, drastically improved reliability and reduced parasitic friction. The battery of all 164s is placed in the trunk to achieve a close 50:50 weight distribution. Next was a turbocharged 2.0 L 8-valve engine, derived from the Lancia Thema i.e. Turbo, and including an overboost feature (this was later replaced by a turbocharged V6 in some markets). The top-line engine was the 3.0 L "Arese" V6 designed by Giuseppe Busso originally for the Alfa 6 . Initially it was of the older 12v design but was later revised to 24 valves for the QV model. The 3.0 L 24 valve V6 was also used to power the four-wheel drive Q4 variant. For some markets, a turbocharged 2.0 L V6 was developed, based from the 3.0 L engine with reduced displacement and a very sophisticated engine management system from Bosch . Finally, there was also a turbodiesel version with an engine sourced from the Italian engine maker VM Motori . Rated at 125 PS (92 kW), even this weakest version was capable to propel the 164 past the 200 km/h (124 mph) mark. This was the fastest diesel saloon on those days. The 164 served as the basis of the Alfa Romeo Proteo , which in turn served as the basis of the new Alfa Romeo Spider . [ 6 ] The 164 also served as the basis of the Italdesign Scighera supercar concept — interestingly, only the engine output was uprated, the majority of the car's underpinnings, and even its interior being shared with the 164 without significant change. The Alfa Romeo 164 Pro-Car made in 1988 was a 3.5L V10 mid-engined racing car. The Alfa Romeo V10 engine was originally planned to be used for Ligier Formula One cars and produced 620 bhp (462 kW; 629 PS) at 13300 rpm and 39 kg·m (380 N·m; 280 lb·ft) of torque at 9500 rpm. [ 7 ] Weighting only 750 kg (1,653 lb) the 164 Pro-Car achieved a top speed of 340 km/h (211 mph) and went quarter of a mile (~400 m) in only 9.7 seconds. [ 7 ] It was planned to race in a special racing series (as a support event to Formula One Grands Prix). Alfa was only manufacturer who made a car for this series before it was canceled. Only one chassis with an Alfa Romeo V10 was built by Motor Racing Developments Ltd., [ 7 ] the company behind the Brabham Formula One team, which was owned by Alfa Romeo at the time. Alfa Romeo' s in-house V6 engine design made its initial début in 1979 in the Alfa 6 . Introduced in 2.5 L guise, production engines would eventually range from 2.0 L to 3.2 L displacement. With modifications it is possible to increase engine displacement to 3.8 L (~232 cu in). Initially developed in the early 1970s by Giuseppe Busso , the original SOHC 12-valve design employed short push-rods to operate the exhaust valves in a design similar to that of earlier BMW / Bristol engines. In 1993, the first DOHC version of this engine appeared powering the Alfa Romeo 164. The Alfa Romeo V6 has been also quite popular in "kit car" type vehicles like the Ultima GTR , [ 5 ] Hawk HF Series [ 6 ] and DAX. [ 7 ] and is also used in the Gillet Vertigo sports car. Both carburettor 132 PS (97 kW ; 130 hp ) and fuel injected versions were available from the start. A 2.0 turbocharged version, derived from the 3.0 L 12v, was introduced in 1991 in the Alfa Romeo 164 with 210 PS (154 kW; 207 hp). Applications: 1983–1986 Alfa Romeo Alfa 6 1984–1987 Alfa Romeo 90 1991–1997 Alfa Romeo 164 (2.0 L turbo) 1995–2001 Alfa Romeo GTV & Spider (2.0 L turbo) 1998–2002 Alfa Romeo 166 (2.0 L turbo) [ edit ] 2.5 The 2.5L as longitudinal installation in GTV6. The original engine displaced 2.5 L (2,492 cc (152.1 cu in)) and produced 158 PS (116 kW; 156 hp). It was a 2-valve per cylinder design with a single belt-driven camshaft per cylinder bank and six carburettors fitted. Fuel injection was added for the 1983 Alfa 6, which produced the same 158 PS (116 kW; 156 hp). The 2-valve engine ended its life in the Alfa 155 , where there were two series for this engine, the 2.5 L developing 166 PS (122 kW; 164 hp). Differences between them were small and only on torque and power delivery producing exactly the same horsepower. Applications: 1979–1986 Alfa Romeo Alfa 6 1980–1986 Alfa Romeo GTV6 1984–1987 Alfa Romeo 90 1985–1991 Alfa Romeo 75/Milano 1992–1997 Alfa Romeo 155 1985–1996 Fiat Croma 1987–1989 Rayton Fissore Magnum V6 [ 9 ] [ edit ] Four-valve 2.5L V6 24V from Alfa Romeo 156 . A four-valve version was introduced in 1997 with the Alfa Romeo 156. The engine now produced 190 PS (140 kW; 187 hp). In 2001, the V6 was uprated to 192 PS (141 kW; 189 hp). The 166 used a slightly detuned version to make more low rev torque. This engine version was awarded as the International Engine of the Year in 2000. The engine has a 88 mm (3.5 in) bore and a 68.3 mm (2.69 in) stroke. [ 10 ] Applications: 1997–2005 Alfa Romeo 156 1998–2007 Alfa Romeo 166 [ edit ] 3.0 The 2.5 L engine was bored and stroked out to 3.0 L (2,959 cc (180.6 cu in)) for the 1987 75/Milano Verde , where it produced 185 PS (136 kW; 182 hp), still with 2 valves per cylinder. This engine was modified for transverse placement in the 164 and fitted with a high-performance camshaft and low-restriction exhaust, producing 192 PS (141 kW; 189 hp) in standard form, 184 PS (135 kW; 181 hp) when a catalyzer was fitted in 1991, with the Cloverleaf version producing 200 PS (147 kW; 197 hp). The same engine fitted to the SZ was tuned to a further 210 PS (154 kW; 207 hp). Applications: 1987–1991 Alfa Romeo 75/Milano 1989–1991 Alfa Romeo SZ 1992–1994 Alfa Romeo RZ 1992–1994 Lancia Thema 1988–1992 Alfa Romeo 164 1995–2003 Alfa Romeo GTV & Spider [ edit ] Four-valve 3.0L V6 24V from Alfa Romeo 164 . 3.0L V6 24V, newer version with red texts. 3.0L 24V used in Lancia Kappa had black intake runners. The engine was upgraded to dual overhead cams and four valves per cylinder in 1993. Due to this and other refinements, this engine produced 211 PS (155 kW; 208 hp) for the regular 1993 164 , with 230 PS (169 kW; 227 hp) and 276 N·m (204 ft·lbf) in the 164 QV with the Euro 3 engine producing 232 PS (171 kW; 229 hp) on the Q4 model which in its final production run in 1996, it got reduced to 228 PS (168 kW; 225 hp) but with increased torque. The final run of 3.0 V6 engines fitted to the GTV and 166 range, produced 220 PS (162 kW; 217 hp). Applications: 1993–1996 Alfa Romeo 164 1995–2003 Alfa Romeo GTV & Spider 1998–2005 Alfa Romeo 166 1994–2001 Lancia Kappa 1998–present Gillet Vertigo [ edit ] 3.2 3.2L engine from Alfa Romeo 147 GTA. In 2002 Alfa Romeo introduced the 156 GTA with a 3.2 L (3,179 cc (194.0 cu in)) version of the V6 with 250 PS (184 kW; 247 hp) and 300 N·m (220 ft·lbf) of torque. Later this engine was also used in the Alfa Romeo 166, GTV, Spider and Alfa Romeo GT in a slightly detuned form 240 PS (177 kW; 237 hp). The engine has a 93 mm (3.7 in) bore and a 78 mm (3.1 in) stroke. [ 13 ] The engine was replaced in the 159 and Brera by a new 3.2 L V6 unit combining a General Motors-designed engine block with Alfa Romeo cylinder heads and induction. British automotive engineering company Cosworth was keen to buy assembly lines of the Alfa Romeo V6 engine, but the Italian company did not want to sell it. [ 14 ] The last version of 3.2 L engine was Euro4 compliant, so it would have been possible to produce it a couple of years more. [ 15 ] The engine designer Giuseppe Busso died only a couple of days after the last engine was produced in Arese. That's not a bad pedigree for a large executive saloon. Alfa fanatics may even tell you that the 164 is what a saloon version of a Testarossa would look like. But while the 164's wedgy profile and horizontal styling lines are (vaguely) reminiscent of the wideboy Ferrari, we reckon you'd really have to squint to make the connection. That's not to say that the Alfa isn't a looker, though, with its understated, elegant Italian style and beautifully balanced proportions. mmm....Italian wedge... The Alfa Romeo 164 was the last of the Type Four project cars to come to market, hitting the showrooms in 1988, and shares the majority of its underpinnings with the Fiat Croma, Lancia Thema and the Saab 9000 (also the subject of a recent shed). The 164 is, however, a sleeker, more aerodynamic design than its Type four cousins and, as such, has bespoke front suspension to fit into the more rakish bodywork. Although the more fundamentalist Alfisti may be upset at the thought of a front-drive Alfa, the 164 has a reputation as a fine-handling car. It's also less prone to the horrors of rust than some Alfas, being the first car the company made to use galvanised steel for the frame and some body panels. We'd still worry a little about the electrics, though - the 164 had the most complex wiring loom of any Alfa at the time, and up to three on-board computers. Very eighties, but it still looks cool This particular 164 is a 1991 3.0-litre V6 lusso with the four-speed ZF auto. That means just two valves per cylinder, 182bhp and 192lb ft of torque (24v versions had up to 229bhp). Even so, its top speed should be north of 140mph. The advert doesn't exactly go into great detail, but this is a two-owner car with a long-ish MOT and a reasonably sensible 98,000 miles on the clock. It looks pretty clean, too, and is surely one of the most glorious-sounding Italian creations this side of the Rome Philharmonic. For £650, we think it's definitely worth a look. The first is that, though many of them go very quickly, most of them shouldn't. The second is that high-speed is very different to high-performance. And thirdly? Well of course, the most exciting performance cars are almost always made in Italy. Though responsibility isn't high on the agenda in the land of pasta and Chianti, the concept of creating the true driving experience certainly is. For proof, take a drive in Alfa Romeos 164. Getting an executive five-seat, four-door saloon to look, sound and handle like something youd have bought in your irresponsible bachelor days is no mean feat. Better still, these days theyre available second hand for not very much money. An intelligent, cheap big car choice. This was the first Alfa Romeo to seriously hold its value on the used market but that was some time ago and today 164s are positioned firmly in the bargain basement. The V6 makes a glorious sound; so, surprisingly, does the four cylinder 2.0-litre Twinspark. Pininfarina's stylish body till looks good, pre or after the facelift introduced in Second generation cars. The later models' improvements were worthwhile, lifting the car into equivalent BMW and Mercedes territory. Equipment levels are extremely high. And the handling? For a front wheel drive car, its still pretty sharp. The range was revised in 1993, and the earliest of the post-facelift cars start at around £450 for a 2.0 Twinspark Super and about £700 for a 3.0-litre. A 3. 0 V6 Super Lusso starts at £1,200 for a 1995 M registered model The Cloverleaf model is available from under £750 for a 1991 J plate car through to £1,800 for a 1997 R registered example. The V6 engine can misfire under heavy acceleration (due to faulty engine management) and the cooling system can leak at the water pump and the bottom radiator hose joint. Tyre wear is heavy at the front and clutch wear in common on V6 models (expect to replace the clutch at 60,000 miles). The gearboxes were quite good, but look out for a weak syncromesh on 3rd gear on some early V6 models. The gear linkage has also been known to break, leaving some cars stuck in gear. Check all the gadgets (particularly the automatic air conditioning if fitted and the electric seats). (approx based on a 1992 2.0) A clutch assembly will be around £150. A starter motor will be about £250. Brake pads front and rear are about £100 and £65 per pair. A replacement headlamp is close to £125. Major and minor services are around £325 and £205 respectively. If you could compare revving an engine to eating ice cream, then this would be Haagen Daas double chocolate chip; you never get bored of listening to either powerplant. Drive either 164 back to back with rivals from either Mercedes or BMW (or with almost all the other competitors in this bracket) and you notice two things. First of all, the Alfa is a lot quicker - which isn't surprising given that even the Twin Spark engine puts out a substantial 148bhp through the front wheels. Rest to sixty in this car takes a little over nine seconds on the way to 126mph. The second thing you notice is that the Alfa also feels a lot quicker. The throttle response is immediate, the steering direct and responsive and the gearbox short-throw and sweet shifting. The sound and fury of this engine obliterate reason. Matched with vastly improved front wheel drive handling, it's difficult to resist the challenge of a twisting sequence of bends. Not that things are perfect by any means. Alfa never completely eradicated the torque steer that plagued the 164 from its beginnings. In fact, on a bumpy road under hard acceleration, the car's wayward behaviour is almost unnerving. Still, if everything about the car was perfect, it wouldn't be an Alfa Romeo, nor would it be half as fascinating to own. Good enough to still be considered as a budget big car choice. Buy one; you'll enjoy it - I promise.
