[ 3 ] The 145 and 146 both share common design plans and interior components from the B-pillar forwards; the 145 is a three-door hatchback, whereas the 146 is a five-door. Contents 1 History 2 Performance adaptations 3 Engine specifications 3.1 Petrol 3.2 Diesel 4 Timeline 5 References 6 External links [ edit ] History Facelift Alfa Romeo 146 To replace its ageing 33 model , Alfa Romeo launched these two cars in 1994 (the 145) and 1995 (the 146) to compete in the extremely competitive mid-size hatchback market. A spacious and uniquely Italian interior was presented to the press at the launch, and by all accounts it was well received; its oddly shaped cut-away dashboard attracted much attention, but in fact the design was for safety and practicality rather than aesthetics. Based on the Fiat Groups's Tipo platform, the cars were widely praised for their handling, particularly the sharp, responsive steering. Early cars used boxer engines passed down from the old 33 in 1.3/1.4 (same engine, badge depends on market. Not sold in UK), 1.6 8 valve and 1.7 16 valve forms. In 1996, the flagship Cloverleaf (145) and Ti (146) models were launched with the 2.0-litre Twin Spark engine already seen in the 155 sister car. [ 4 ] 1.6 and 1.8 Twin Spark engines soon followed to replace the less powerful boxers. The 1.8-litre and 2.0-litre engine cars were equipped with 'quick-rack' steering (also seen on the 155, GTV and Spider) which improved steering responsiveness, but as a result the turning circle was compromised. This was also featured on the 1.6-litre Junior model in 1998. The sporty suspension set-up was harsher than many others in its category at the time, but this was in line with the Fiat Group's marketing of Alfa Romeo as a sporting brand and it is said to have resulted in class leading handling. Styling themes introduced in the Alfa Romeo 164 were continued, and the lighting clusters of the 146 provided a preview of the forthcoming Alfa Romeo 166 and 156 . The more conservatively styled 146 proved a bigger sales success than the edgy design of the 145 which it seems was too avant-garde for main stream sales success. Both the 145 and 146 have a strong following, particularly in top specification Cloverleaf and Ti guises as they are seen by many as not only the last old school hot hatch built by Alfa but arguably by any car company. While the volume of 145s and 146s sold was moderately low, parts availability is good, in most cases they are still available direct from Alfa Romeo . Owners clubs can often advise on multiple sources of parts or workarounds. Eventually in 2000 the cars were superseded by the all new 147 which was a far bigger commercial success with its acclaimed styling front end and improved quality, but many enthusiasts feel that it lost a little of the special feel and Alfa Romeo that the 145 and 146 had. [ edit ] Performance adaptations The 145 and 146 are prized by performance minded Alfisti as a source of performance upgrades for the earlier Sprint . As these cars were initially designed for use with the Alfasud boxer engines, and later updates with Twinspark units, it is technically feasible to take a late 16v boxer engine from these cars and directly transplant them into a Sprint, giving the car a tremendous performance upgrade in the process. Engine power was slightly lowered as a result. 1999 - 1.9 JTD Turbo Diesel replaced existing diesel engine. 2000 - Various minor revisions, including color-coded bumpers, door handles and mirrors. Higher spec versions also gained side airbags. As the direct successor to the companys 33 range, the 146 was further evidence of Alfas rebirth as a maker of sensible yet, still characterful cars. The 146 first appeared in May 1995, offering buyers a wide choice of four-cylinder engines. These were initially the traditional boxer style, carried over from the 33. Later, powerful Twin Spark units arrived; offering better refinement and performance. For the used buyer, any of these cars makes an interesting and sensible buy, particularly when you consider the vastly improved quality and reliability compared to older Alfa products. Roominess is what family car buyers traditionally look for and the 146 is by no means disgraced by its competitors. To show how determined the 146s designers were to ensure adequate space, they placed the split-folding rear bench lower than in the 145 in order to increase headroom. Other practicalities include capacious luggage space, reasonable economy and, thank goodness, a driving position that doesn't require you to be a gawky Italian (long legs and short arms) as on Milanese models of not so distant memory. There's also plenty of equipment. Power steering, electric front windows, an engine immobiliser, central locking and a driver's airbag are standard on virtually every model. The earliest 1.6-litre cars can be found for as little as £1,000. These M-platers date from May 1995, while 1996 N-reg examples start at about £1,300. The 1. 7-litre 146 is a popular choice among enthusiast drivers who need a compact family car. You should only expect to pay around £100-£200 above equivalent 1.6-litre prices. These engines were replaced by new 16-valve 1. 6 and 1.8-litre cars in Spring 1997 - both bear the legend Twin Spark on the rear hatch. They start from £1,500 and £1,600 respectively. If you must have a 2. 0-litre car, then youre looking at a minimum of about £1,400 for the first N-platers. X-reg examples are currently fetching just over £3,600. There are one or two unusual areas of concern with these cars. Check with the seller that the car has had its drivers-side airbag checked by a dealer. Both 145 and 146 were recalled after several reported cases of random inflation. The first 1. 6 and 1.7-litre cars encouraged a driving style in which enthusiastic revving of the engine was often needed to keep things moving along. For this reason, some examples may have suffered at the hands of drivers fancying themselves as Fangio on the Mille Miglia. Owners of these boxer-engined cars also ignore service intervals at their peril. Though largely reliable units, the 1.6 and 1.7-litre motors will almost certainly have a short life if oil changes have been neglected. The later Twin Spark units are more modern and more dependable, if you get a car with a full service history, there should be few problems. Check under the engine filler cap and dipstick - the colour and texture of the oil should never be black or show signs of sludge build-up and the exhaust should, naturally, be smoke-free at idle. (approx based on a 146 1.8 TS) A clutch assembly will be around £127, while the rear section of the exhaust system should be just under £230. An alternator will be about £199 and a replacement headlamp is close to £119. Major servicing is needed every 60,000 miles. When Alfa came to develop the 1.6 and 1.8-litre 'Twin Spark' engines for the revised 146, refinement was given priority over resonance. Even the `Alfisti` (enthusiasts) admit that these powerplants were more universally acceptable as well as being cleaner, smoother and more powerful than their predecessors. All the engines available show off the impressive handling abilities of the cars, which have also been combined with a compliant ride. The seats are particularly well designed in the 146, offering both comfort and support. Stylish and sensible, roomy and reliable. The current Alfa renaissance has a lot to do with the impressive reputation of the 146. Auto Express Car Reviews October 2004 Alfa Romeo has made some of the world's most stylish cars over the last decade. The problem is, its best looking models are also usually the least reliable. The 145 three-door hatchback and 146 four-door saloon of 1994 are perfect examples. Both offer striking looks, and have stood the test of time well. However, early cars came with flat-four engines from the 33. These were poor performers and suffered from weak gearboxes. Much better were the Twin Spark units introduced in 1996. Debuting in 150bhp 2.0-litre form, 1.6 and 1.8-litre versions were also available. As long as they have been serviced properly, they should offer dependable performance. The 145 and 146 are fun to drive, but dubious build quality has tarnished their reputation. However, galvanised bodywork means rust isn't an issue, and prices have now hit rock bottom. Checklist * Cambelt: a Tricky change means dealers charge ΂£750 - and it's done every 36,000 miles on Twin Spark engines. A specialist should do it for ΂£400. Alfa used to quote 72,000 miles between changes, but shortened this to avoid any damage. * Gearboxes: gearboxes on boxer engines can be weak - listen for whines. * Cooling: water pumps and radiators are weak spots. Keep an eye on the temperature gauge on the test drive. Ensure the fan cuts in by leaving a warm engine idling. * Warning lights: the injector warning light is prone to coming on, due to either a sensor problem or a broken thermostat. A specialist will be able to read the fault code issued and diagnose the problem. * Engine: spark plugs are expensive for Twin Spark engines (΂£100 for eight) but last for 60,000 miles. TS models are more reliable than flat-fours, but high oil consumption is common on all cars. Driving Impressions Forget the boxer models - the TS variants are far superior, particularly the 145 Cloverleaf 2.0-litre. With 150bhp, it's a real hot hatch with bags of character. The handling is impressive and the chassis well balanced when cornering, while surprisingly direct steering makes both the 145 and 146 great fun. Glass's View The 146 tends to struggle on the used market and needs to be realistically priced if it has any chance of finding a home. The 145, on the other hand, is the preferred model, and although it was cheaper than the 146 when it was new, it's now worth more on the second-hand market. The 1.8 and 2.0-litre Cloverleaf models are the two variants that attract the most interest, but there are relatively few examples available. Build quality remains an issue for all. Jeff Paterson, senior editor, Glass's Guide Life With A 145 As a second-hand buy, the Alfa Romeo 145's performance and practicality make it a real bargain. Just don't expect German standards of build quality, though. MR Pimblett, Canterbury, Kent I get great performance from my 146 and the handling is fantastic. The interior materials and build quality could be better, and the fuel economy leaves a lot to be desired, too. With these changes, the pair have come of age. All engines provide sporty performance, with bucket seats and an improved gearchange enhancing the enjoyment. Steering and handling are hot hatchback standard. It's a bit noisy and the ride is far from the best, but there are few family cars with more character. There are three trims - 1.6, 1.6L and 1.7 -and all have electric windows and driver's airbag, but base 1.6 lacks ABS. 1996: 150bhp 2.0-litre 16v 145 Cloverleaf and 146 Ti variants introduced. 1997: Boxer engines replaced with 120bhp 1.6-litre and 140bhp 1.8-litre 16-valve Twin Spark units. 1998: 145/146 Junior 1.6 TS launched, with alloys and colour-coded bumpers. - Advertisement - Company Website | Media Information | Contact Us | Privacy Notice | Subs Info | Voucher Codes | Sitemap Our Other Websites: The First Post | Custom PC | Evo | IT Pro | IT Pro India | MacUser | Men's Fitness | Micro Mart | PC Pro | bit-tech | Know Your Mobile | Octane | Expert Reviews | Channel Pro | Know Your Cell | Know Your Mobile India | iGizmo | Digital SLR Photography | Den of Geek | The Week | Computer Shopper | Dennis Communications | Magazines | Mobile Phone Deals | Competitions | Health & Fitness | CarBuyer © 2010 Dennis Publishing Limited.
